I liked the architecture of the museum and the views of the river from the museum terraces and windows. The exhibits in the museum were interesting but not outstanding. Most of the walls were barren. There were scanty artefacts in huge rooms . An exercise video was playing , it was filmed in Hawaii , I felt odd after seeing it . There were several close ups of instructors crotches . I did not see the purpose of it . I am glad I had received two free tickets, I would not have paid $60 for that .

We walked the High Line and the logical conclusion was to visit the Whitney. It’s a lovely museum, albeit a little pricey compared to some of the other iconic museums in the area. Be sure to go to the top floors. The views are great.

May 2026:
Visited for the first time. Enjoyed a very pleasant day walking around the exhibits. There is a cafe on the top floor that has good coffee and baked goods. Had a tasty 😋 cookie.

Getting tickets online ahead of time is recommended. Will be back again!

Whitney Museum of American Art is one of my favorite modern art museums in New York, and I make a point of visiting it almost every time I’m in the city. Located in the trendy and constantly evolving Meatpacking District, near the High Line, the museum beautifully combines contemporary art, impressive architecture, and a unique New York atmosphere.

The museum spans several floors in a striking modern building, featuring spacious galleries, open terraces, and beautiful views of the city and the Hudson River. From the moment you enter, you can feel that this is a vibrant, dynamic, and inspiring place.

One of the things I love most about the Whitney is the wide variety of exhibitions. Alongside its permanent collection of modern and contemporary American art, the museum hosts excellent temporary exhibitions, so every visit offers something new and interesting to discover. Even visitors who are not typical “museum people” can usually find an exhibition here that speaks to them and captures their interest.

The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed rather than overly formal, making the museum feel accessible and enjoyable. It’s easy to spend several hours here exploring, thinking, and getting inspired — whether visiting alone, as a couple, or with family.

Another great advantage is that admission is free on Friday afternoons, making the experience even more worthwhile for visitors to the city.

For me, this is one of the most interesting, modern, and enjoyable museums in New York, and a place I’m always happy to return to.

Overall, we enjoyed the museum. Of course, some of the exhibitions may not be for everyone, but in general it was interesting and definitely a good place to spend the day. There was a lot to see, and the visit left a positive impression overall.

I love a great museum. The Whitney isn’t my go to place for a museum BUT I love the free Friday’s during the summer and the permanent collection is amazing. I got to see The Rose in person which is something I have always dreamed of seeing. I am so happy they had it on display and also got to see it for free. I would also recommend going to the studio bar on the 8th floor for a fun evening night drink. Really helps ease you into the headspace to look at some creative masterpieces.

Went on a free Friday night to explore the Biennial. It is a bewitching, bewildering, life changing show. Several times I was moved to tears from the intense work. Also as fulfilling as the show is the building with its many balconies. Whenever I needed a break from the art I went outside to gaze out at the skyline, the high line, and the river. My life is now divided between before and after the biennial. Which is how good art should do. Pro tip: there’s a first floor gallery tucked away so ask a guard for directions.

I visited this museum during the second Sunday of the month, which is free access for everyone. And I must say this is a very interesting museum that gives you a fresh perspective about modern American art with different kind of material, it has great views of the city and two cafeterias. This is definitely a great place to spend time alone lost in the art and the views, or with friends or family

The 82nd Biennial is a total mood shift! Unlike the heavy solemnity of the last one, this edition is vibrant, cheerful, and a full-on sensory assault in the best way. It’s less of a "stare at a wall" vibe and more of a living, breathing ecosystem that captures exactly where American art is headed—a sophisticated, tactile, and surprisingly optimistic "prison" for the future.

Pro tip: Treat yourself to a coffee or a beer at the Studio Bar on the 8th floor. The views from the terrace are iconic, and the pastries are elite. We had a cannelé that traveled perfectly from the Frenchette bakery on the 1st floor; it’s the perfect crunchy, custardy companion for those views.

Definitely worth the trip to Gansevoort Street. Just try to keep your hands to yourself—the art textures are tempting!

Free if you're 25 or younger - reservable online. Nothing blew us away though - 2 floors closed and only 1 exhibit that was interesting to us. I'm sure it'd be great as a local, but if you're an upcoming tourist reading this, there are much better museums in the city.

The Whitney is an amazing museum and absolutely worth the visit. With free Friday nights and free second Sundays, there is no reason to stay away. Their permanent collection is inspiring and leaves the viewer with a newfound pride in country, and pride in art. The vibe at the Whitney is unmatched in coolness. The building is a work of art, the elevators are works of art, the restaurant is a work of art, The Whitney defines art in its own way. Tonight when I went there was a free Alvin Ailey Dance class that was baller. There's always something awesome at The Whitney. Go to this museum. Your life will be improved because of it.

I went to the Whitney Museum to participate in the Alvin Ailey Extension free Friday night event. It was a West African dance class. The staff was friendly and helpful when I walked in. It was my first visit here. The class was on the 3rd floor at the end of the long hallway. When you walk into the room, you'll be asked to sign a waiver. The room was large and spacious, but it quickly filled up as the 6:30 pm start time approached. However, once the amazing teacher got started and we all started moving, we had a wonderful time. There were so many different types of people in the room, from different backgrounds and dance levels, but we all had so much fun. I only took two pictures, then put my phone away to enjoy the moment, but I totally recommend checking out their programs! I will go again, it's free, just have to get a ticket on the museum site, and the ACE and L trains are within walking distance.

A must-see museum in New York with magnificent works from the 20th century and contemporary American art. One of my favourite in NYC. Beautiful iconic pieces! The size of the museum is perfect; it's not too big for people who prefer medium-sized venues, and it's very airy and bright. It offers a beautiful view of the Meatpacking District from the terrace and has a cafe downstairs and upstairs. Not to be missed.

The Whitney offers a strong and thoughtfully curated selection of American art. The museum itself is relatively compact, which makes it easy to navigate and enjoy without feeling overwhelmed.

That said, tickets were $30 during my visit, and 2 of the 5 floors were closed for renovation. Given that, it might make more sense to plan a visit when all floors are open to get the full experience and value. Still, the quality of the exhibitions on display was solid and worthwhile.

I came for Free Fridays at the Whitney and it’s such a vibe! I visited the Whitney Museum yesterday and had such a great experience. The museum is full of modern and contemporary art from a variety of artists and time periods, so there’s always something unique to discover on each floor. What really stood out to me were the outdoor terraces — every level has beautiful views of the city skyline, and catching the sunset from there was just amazing. It’s definitely one of the best spots in NYC for both art and views.

The layout is easy to navigate, and the galleries are spacious, which makes exploring feel relaxed rather than rushed. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my visit. To finish the evening, I headed up to the rooftop where you can enjoy a drink while looking out over the skyline — a perfect way to end the museum trip.

Overall, the Whitney is a must-visit if you enjoy art, city views, or just want a nice cultural outing. I’d definitely recommend going in the late afternoon so you can enjoy the exhibits and then step outside to see the sunset from the terraces.
