Really loved the food of this place. The flavors were rich, fresh and just a delicious experience. Their Tonchin Classic Ramen was phenomenal. Will definitely return here.

(05.23.26) Rating: 4.3

Been here a couple times- the lunch special is a great deal.
Ordered the unagi rice ball and kyuri. My friends got the summer special and dashi ramen. I love the rice ball because they have a little bookmark separating the rice and seaweed that you pull out right before you eat it to guarantee the crispiness of the seaweed when you eat it.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your review, Jaynee. We are so happy to hear you enjoy your experience at Tonchin. We sincerely appreciate your continued support, and we cannot wait to have you again soon!

My Restaurant Report Card: A

🍤Ebi Tokyo Rice Ball: D
- Tempura Shrimp + Seaweed and Rice. Nothing special to see here. It's good, but essentially those basics assembled together.

🍄‍🟫Kinoko Buns: B-
- mushrooms absorbed a lot of the onion, sweet soy sauce flavor. Greens made it crisp and fresh. Enjoyed!

🍜Classic Tokyo Tonkatsu: A+
- My new favorite ramen in NYC. The pork, fatty bone marrow-ish broth is EVERYTHING! Noodles were standard fare. Not too thin, not too thick. I personally would've like a bit more al dente/firmness.

Ippudo used to be my 🥇. This puts Ippudo's pork ramen into C- tier by comparison. If out of towners wanted a NYC ramen, I would take them here for this bowl. It's simple and damn near perfect.

🍜Smoked Dashi: D
- Too fishy for me. Personal Bias: not a fan of seafood or briny flavors. Seafood flavor too strong. Did not enjoy.

F: Not Good. Never Return.
D: Good, but One and Done.
C: Would Return to Try Other Items, Second Chance.
B: Would Return and Get Same Items Again.
A: So Impressed, Would Bring Out of Towners Here.
S: If Moving Tomorrow, This Would Be My Last Meal.

I went to Tonchin New York and the experience was exactly the kind of combination of Japanese authenticity and modern execution that you look for in a city like New York. The ramen was, without exaggeration, the highlight – rich, well-balanced soup, with depth of flavor and ingredients cooked correctly. You can clearly feel the attention to detail and respect for the original recipe. The eel temaki was a very pleasant surprise – intense, slightly sweet, perfectly balanced. The kind of dish that looks simple but is executed at a high level. The finale was “heroic”, as any memorable meal should be: the Kakigori. An extremely well-constructed dessert – light, refreshing, but at the same time complex, with the combination of fine ice, ice cream and banana that works flawlessly. A big plus is also the location – very well positioned, close to the main tourist attractions, which makes it an ideal stop after a busy day in the city. Overall: a restaurant that delivers real quality, not just hype. Definitely worth a visit if you're in New York and want an authentic yet refined Japanese experience.

So so good!! Noodles were al dente and bouncy. Broth was insanely good— has umami and not too thick. The shiso and cucumber appetizers for me was full of distinct flavor and texture. Love!!!

Great ramen spot! Would recommend making a booking in advance - it’s not too hard to find a slot 1-2 weeks out. Service was relaxed and food came out quickly. Ordered the kyuri (cucumber) as a starter and it was small but fresh. Tried the classic Tonkotsu ramen and it’s one the best I’ve had - the broth wasn’t too salty or rich, the noodles were not too chewy, 3 pieces of pork which wasn’t too fatty and the egg was flavourful. Highlight was the Tokyo Banana dessert though which I would recommend!! It was very addicting, not too sweet and not filling at all, would return for this!

Thank you for your review, Sonia! We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the experience at Tonchin and cannot wait to have you again soon.

Awesome hole in the wall. Came across this ramen shop not knowing it was a Michelin star restaurant! Service was so friendly and the atmosphere brought me back to Japan.

We got the Tonkotsu, Smoked Dashi, Mikan Aperol & ofcourse the Matcha Kakigori!

Loved the meal and experience overall.

Relatively short 10-20 mins wait time cause we popped in with no reservation around 4pm! Will definitely be back next time!

Thank you for your review, Theresa. We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the experience at Tonchin! We cannot wait to have you again.

Great food! We ordered a bunch of things like the gyoza, chicken wings, tonkotsu ramen, another ramen (i forgot the name of it), and the tokyo banana pudding. I personally liked the banana pudding the best. The atmosphere and decorations added to the experience of a relaxing but chic lunch. Would go here again.

Thank you so much for your review, em. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the experience at Tonchin and loved our Tokyo Banana especially. We cannot wait to have you again!

Lunch special for me, $28. Started with the tsukune (chicken “meatball” bun) very tasty. I got the spicy Dan Dan Ramen, which was flavorful and delicious, the noodles were cooked to perfection, and the broth had just the right amount of spice. The place has a kind of basic/funky vibe, servers were very nice and efficient and the place was quite busy at lunchtime.

The Smokey miso noodles was SO GOOD! The dipping noodles was also excellent. Love the thick noodles. Both noodles had a nice texture and chew while the broth popped with flavor. I used to work in the offices above over 20 years ago. It would have been great to have a noodle shop here back then. This is definitely in my top 10 ramen spots in NYC. Don’t need to fly to Japan for an excellent bowl of noodles. Come here.

Great food and service, did not disappoint. No wait time. I had not tried the shave ice before and didn't realize it is ENORMOUS. We barely finished it between two people, would be better for 3-4. Was delicious though. I was also very impressed with the vegan options. Would love to come back.

I wasn't really a ramen person but this is my favorite ramen spot in nyc! Everything off of their menu is great. My go to has been the smoked dashi ramen (with clams) and I highly recommend the tebasaki wings. I have almost tried all of their kakigori flavors - the matcha and mango have been so refreshing! The only thing is that I wish the mushroom dish had a bigger portion because it's more of a side dish portion.

Tonchin is a must try in New York. The wings are spicy but delicious. The bun is so good. I could eat another. The broth for the ramen is not very salty or greasy. Delicious. It’s best to book a table.. if you wait for walk-in, there’s a time limit. The place is moderately noisy. There’s baskets underneath the chairs to put your jackets. The server is great. She explains to us the different types of noodles that they offer. Original is best.

The gyoza were unimpressive in my opinion — they lacked a strong pork flavor and the sauce didn’t pair very well with them.

However, I was here for the ramen. The ramen broth was delicious, very rich, and deep in flavor. The biggest gripe I had was with the thickness of the chashu. Genuinely so disappointing that the tonkotsu featured three thin pieces of pork. There were a few delicious bamboo shoots also in the ramen which added a new textural element which was appreciated.

To be honest, I wouldn’t come here again for just the ramen — I believe there are better spots in the city. But if you’re looking for a cure date night spot with decent ramen, this is the perfect place.

definitely make a reservation! we tried to walk in at 5pm and it was a 1.5 hour wait, so we made a resy for the next day!

the front gets congested & a bit chaotic as the restaurant is quite busy! but once seated, service is quick and friendly. ramen noodles had a nice bite to it, but the broth wasn’t as complex as i’d like. the baos were unique but overall, everything was a bit too fusion-y despite the great presentation.
