The best bagels in the city. Tompkins is really that girl. They never miss. One billion flavors of cream cheese, perfect bagels and they’re located right off Tompkins. Also, I’m a big beverage girl and their selection of bevs is stunning. Grab yourself a bagel then find a nice bench in the park, just trust me. Tompkins 4ever

Response from the owner

Rachel, thank you so much for the love—really glad you’re enjoying the bagels, all the cream cheese flavors, and our beverage lineup. We love that you made it a whole Tompkins-and-the-park moment, and we’ll keep working hard to never miss.

We told our friend we wanted a good bagel breakfast sandwich and this is where he recommended. Got the Kaitlyn on an everything bagel and my friends got the weezer and just a bacon egg cheese. Everyone loved what they ordered! Long line but very efficient. Bagels were great, toppings were amazing.

Response from the owner

Thanks so much, Courtney! I’m glad you and your friends loved the Kaitlyn, the Weezer, and the classic bacon egg & cheese, and that the everything bagel and toppings hit the spot. We really appreciate your patience with the line—happy to hear the team kept things moving.

I Have literally been all over the World……..very very Rarely have I run across such sublime food. Bagels made on premises, cream cheese concoctions exquisitely created….!!! And the workers so upbeat, eager to please. All with a work ethic that use to be the norm in this Country. And when everyone from Amazon, Netflix…..other eateries nickel and diming you to death by skimping on products and services , that NOT THE CASE HERE!! More than enough cream cheese on that incredible bagel. Like me trying to describe watching the Amalfi Coast slip by from a ferry. Or watching the traffic on the Venice Grand Canal from the outdoor roof of a tall building, you just have to be there to experience that my words could never fully describe….life is way to short to not experience the exquisite.

Response from the owner

Joseph, thank you so much for this incredible review. We’re really glad you loved the on-site made bagels, our cream cheese creations, and that our team’s upbeat service stood out to you. It means a lot to hear you felt you got great value and a generous schmear—hope to have you back in the shop soon.

After many years in New York, I finally tried Tompkins Square Bagels, and it absolutely did not disappoint. Easily one of the best bagels I’ve had in the city so far. I kept it simple with a toasted salted bagel with butter, and it tasted incredibly fresh, perfectly chewy, and warm in all the right ways. My boyfriend got an everything bagel with three eggs, cheddar cheese, and bacon, and it was just as solid. Classic, no-frills, done right. Definitely living up to the hype. 🥯

Response from the owner

Thank you so much, Nicole! I'm delighted to hear that your first visit to Tompkins Square Bagels was a hit for you both. It's wonderful knowing that our simple yet classic approach resonated with you, and I’m glad our bagels could live up to the New York hype!

We had a wonderful experience at Thompson Square Bagels in the East Village, and it’s definitely a place I’d be happy to return to.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, with a cozy, neighborhood feel that immediately puts you at ease. The service was friendly and relaxed, even though the place was quite busy when we arrived. There was a steady flow of customers, and while seating isn’t always guaranteed, the overall vibe remained pleasant and comfortable. 🙌🏻 The selection of bagels and spreads was very solid, offering something for everyone. Most importantly, the bagels themselves were incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. They had great texture and flavor, clearly made with care and quality ingredients. The coffee was also excellent!!! And I love good coffee 😅 flavorful and well prepared. making it a perfect match for the bagels.
Even with the crowd, the space felt lively in a positive way rather than overwhelming. It’s the kind of place that feels like a local favorite for a reason: simple, tasty, and consistently good.

So!! Thompson Square Bagels offers great food, a friendly atmosphere, and a genuine neighborhood experience. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be coming back again.❤️❤️

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Orit! I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere and that our fresh bagels and flavorful coffee hit the spot for you. We love being a part of the East Village community and can't wait to welcome you back for more delicious experiences!

Tried Tompkins Square Bagels for the first time today (Christmas Eve!), and I'm already hooked. The bagels are fresh, hand-rolled, and perfectly chewy—thick and doughy with that ideal kettle-boiled crust. What really blew me away was the insane variety: so many bagel flavors (French Toast, everything, sesame, and more) and endless house-made cream cheeses and spreads to choose from. I had a tough time deciding!
Service was quick and friendly, even on a holiday—staff kept the line moving smoothly. And the prices? Surprisingly reasonable for NYC quality; great value without feeling overcharged.
If you're in the East Village, this spot is a must. Already planning my next visit!

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for visiting us on Christmas Eve, Valeri! We're delighted to hear that you loved our fresh, hand-rolled bagels and the vast selection of flavors and spreads. Our team will be thrilled to know you appreciated their quick and friendly service, especially during the holiday. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Bagels and cream cheese choices are amazing. Huge selection. The store has enough room for 75-100 people to wait indoors which is nice when it’s cold outside. Line moves reasonably fast but once you order it became slow. Still, great bagels and lives up to the hype.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much, Eric! I'm glad you enjoyed our amazing bagels and wide selection of cream cheese. We appreciate your patience and will work on speeding up service after ordering. We're delighted to hear you think we live up to the hype!

If you are even remotely serious about bagels, Tompkins Square Bagel is worth the hype and then some.

We stopped in while visiting New York City, and it quickly became one of my favorite food moments of the trip. This is not a fully vegan shop, but the number of vegan options offered alongside the regular menu is genuinely impressive and makes it an ideal stop for mixed groups.

The vegan cream cheese selection is outstanding. Sun-dried tomato, spinach artichoke, garlic herb, veggie, plain, scallion, and more. Every option was creamy, flavorful, and exactly what you want with a classic New York bagel. As a longtime vegan, having this many choices felt intentional and exciting.

The bagels themselves are exactly what you hope for in NYC. Fresh, chewy, and perfectly balanced. It is rare to find a place that serves both vegan and non-vegan customers so thoughtfully, and Tompkins Square Bagel truly gets it.

I loved it and cannot wait to go back. I may or may not have strongly encouraged them to consider opening a Raleigh location. Until then, I will happily make this a must-stop every time I am in New York City.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much, Micah! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed our array of vegan cream cheese options and our fresh, chewy bagels. It's wonderful to know that you found our place ideal for both vegan and non-vegan guests, and we're honored to be one of your favorite NYC food stops. Looking forward to welcoming you back on your next city visit!

Definitely the No.1 bagel spot!
I visit here every time I’m in NYC.
The dough is amazing, and the cream cheese and all the fillings are always delicious. The staff is also friendly.

It has a nice atmosphere inside, but I definitely recommend eating outside in Tompkins Square Park — the vibe there is unbeatable.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I'm delighted that you enjoy our amazing dough and delicious cream cheese fillings. It's great to hear that our friendly staff and the vibrant atmosphere at Tompkins Square Park make each visit special for you.

Staff was super friendly, advising me on what to get. Music was nice too. Wasn’t too crowded nor too loud, as places can easily get in NYC, for a Saturday afternoon. Great variety of bagels, and they're tasty. Def recommend the everything bagel, of course!

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for the wonderful review, Syl! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the friendly service and the relaxing atmosphere. It's great that you loved the variety and tastiness of our bagels, especially the everything bagel. Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Rating: 9.5/10
Date Last Visited: 11/9/2025

EDIT: I went back and tried two of the specials, the Triple Crown and something else. Both were amazing, also the same price as a SEC. Bumping this to a 5 star because of the Triple Crown. The dessert/sweet cream cheeses are also delicious.

I ordered a SEC bagel with scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel ($14). The bagel was standard, it rivals other top bagel places in NYC. The bagel was good, I don’t have a lot of complaints. The reason why this isn’t a 5-star is because the price is a bit high for a regular bagel, considering the fact that the portion felt smaller than other bagels I’ve had around the city. A typical bagel sandwich should be around $10-12, and I believe that $14 is a bit high. The wait time is also really long since the line is long, but they expedited the system by taking people’s orders in line the moment they line up. However, the issue is that they take your order too early so if you change your mind, it’s too late since it’s already being made.

Response from the owner

Thank you, Andy, for your feedback. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your SEC bagel with scallion cream cheese and that you found our system to help manage the line well, even if it was a bit quicker than convenient for adjustments. We appreciate your honest input about pricing and portion sizes, and we'll definitely take it into consideration as we continue to improve.

Review is about dine-in experience of breakfast bagel at Avenue A establishment - maintenance is clean, colorful, distinctive, also offering clear sight to baking-boiling WiP. Only a confident house an be so open. Staff is cheerful with a sense of humor.
Bedazzled by the myriad sandwich choices with alluring bynames, I strayed from intended purpose of sampling signature bagels in their barest character. Hope others do not get in similar mixup.
Order taking was efficient. Even patient, as I flubbed over, and over, aimng to sample something offbeat. Somewhere in my mumble (and accent), request for add-on sundried tomatoes got translated to grilled tomatoes. Of course, my mistake was professionally repaired. Thanks.
Double jalapeno (bagel & cream cheese) was spectacular. Everything bagel with sundried tomato cheese was, somehow, unremarkable. We liked that bagels were not overloaded with schmears.
Coffee - strong & bold. Speciality order of no froth and hot milk came as lots of froth and lukewarm concoction, instead 🥳.
Bagel size isn't as large as bragged in reviews. We know couple of places - not far - where they are as big, if not bigger.
Indoor seating is for 8 along the alley leading to colorfully painted backyard; and another dozen on rustic, counter-height stools. This is essentially a takeout joint, with branded bagel wrappings but no provision for plates etc. to facilitate dine-in.

Laudable: Mini canvasses adorn cavern-end walls and add to aesthetic appeal on one hand and double-up as art gallery for a local artist. 👏🏼

The downer: Midway through our breakfast, a store worker opened the backyard door wide, to let in late fall draft. 🥶 We were prevented from closing the door because in-store bakers needed fresh air and respite from heat build-up in their section of store. The chill immediately hit my immuno-compromised wife. While we'll deal with effects of this incidental apathy over next few days, hope owners are more mindful of getting the ventilation system repaired - for the sake of staff, in approaching winter.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed experience. I'm glad you enjoyed the jalapeño bagel and appreciated our cheerful staff and unique art display. I apologize for the mix-up with the door; we'll definitely work on ensuring better comfort inside especially during colder months.

In this occasion I ordered for a whole whet bagel with cream cheese, nova, capers and lettuce. Definitely one of the best bagels on the city. What surprised me was they have an espresso cream cheese, has a coffee lover I couldn’t leave the place without trying it.
Spoiler: was delicious 😋
The environment was excellent and the cashier very friendly. Hope try soon more of the menu.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Jose! I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the whole wheat bagel with nova and were pleasantly surprised by our espresso cream cheese—it's a favorite among coffee lovers. We're looking forward to seeing you again soon to try more from our menu!

Great bagel shop with friendly fast service, a cosy interior, excellent selection, and delicious food. The options for cream cheese, bagels, lox, etc are incredible. I had a sesame bagel with chilli garlic cream cheese and the bagel had solid texture, but the crème cheese was incredible! Flavours came through, but the cream cheese base had an excellent blend of tang and salt.

Gluten free bagels + other snacks and tofu based cream cheeses are available. Gluten free bagels are a +3$ charge but pretty good (for a gluten free bagel).

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your amazing review! I'm glad you enjoyed the sesame bagel with chili garlic cream cheese and appreciated the excellent selection we offer, especially our range of cream cheeses and gluten-free options. It's wonderful to hear positive feedback on both our service and cozy atmosphere!

Great staff. Quick to take order but took time to
Explain the menu so you order the right thing.

We couldn’t decide and got 3 different ones. The favorite was the chicken salad. Everything bagel

Next time I’d love to try the egg everything bagel.

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words, Riley! I'm glad our staff could assist you in making the right choices and that you enjoyed the chicken salad on our everything bagel. We can't wait to see you again soon, and we hope you love the egg everything bagel just as much!
