Incredible service and great options for strict diets

I had a wonderful experience at The Original Buddha Bodai Kosher Vegetarian. I am on a very strict, zero-sodium diet, which usually makes eating at Chinese restaurants impossible.

The hostess and kitchen staff were incredibly accommodating. They took my restrictions seriously and prepared a delicious custom dish of stir-fried fresh vegetables, tofu, and white rice with absolutely no soy sauce, salt, MSG, or pre-made sauces. The food was fresh, clean, and safe for my needs. It’s rare to find a restaurant so willing to customize for its guests. Highly recommended

I really enjoyed it. I ordered curry chicken and omg, the chicken was so tender. I felt the urge to ask how they make their soy so tender!!! I had a side of rice for that and honestly, it was a little dry.
I also ordered the noddles with soup and it was ok, the bbq meat was the highlight of that dish- I wish it had more veggies. But udon noodles are my favorite,so I enjoyed it.
I also had de cheesecake and was so creamy and not overly sweet, i liked it too!
Good size portions.
A clean and bright restaurant for vegetarian dishes. These type of food quality is more than I expected from Chinatown. The prices are comparable to meat-eater dishes that you find in a traditional authentic Chinese restaurant. The roast pork & crispy pork dish is kind of a rip-off; the crispy pork is a piece of bread instead of tofu or bean curd.
Some of the worst service I have ever had. No greeting or smiles. Good luck to catching a waitress and requesting soya sauce. The restaurant was fairly empty. The food was so so. Great number of choices for a vegetarian which was an upside
We loved it here, great food, good portions and heaven for vegetarians. We had the tofu with mushrooms and the "lamb" with vegetables and garlic, and we're having a difficult time deciding which is better.
Overall a great experience at this pure vegetarian gem in NY Chinatown. We enjoyed the Dim Sum.(BBQ bun was delicious). The dumplings were dry and didnt feel too fresh.
For main course or Kung Pao chicken was very tasty (but we didnt like the overload of a cubed crunchy vegetable in this dish).
The vege lamb stew was also delicious along with hot wok tossed fried rice.
Highly recomnend this place !!
Many vegetarian, vegan, kosher and gluten free options but the food was just okay, I can imagine coming here if you can't eat elsewhere. General Tso's was pretty good, peanut noodles were watery. Soup dumplings had no soup
I always have such a pleasant experience here. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always smiling and making you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. The food is nice, warm and satisfying. (I do have to say the sesame chicken batter was extremely thick and tasted like a fried donut which I didn’t love.)

One thing I do want to mention respectfully is the bathroom. Unfortunately, it often smells strongly like urine, and not in a way that seems like someone just used it, it smells like it has been stuck on the floor for a while. It’s very unpleasant to experience right before a meal. Because the bathroom is such a small space, I think it would really benefit from a deep reset…removing everything, fully disinfecting, and then checking and cleaning it regularly throughout the day.

I’m sharing this because the people and the food are truly wonderful, and this small improvement would make the overall experience match how great everything else is.
Great spot for veg Chinese food in the heart of Chinatown. You must order the General Tso chicken it was the standout dish - super tasty, great texture, the brocolli was also delicious with it. We also had the ho fun with mixed veg and the fish with mixed veg. Noodles were great, fish dish was less my type since it was quite gingery but if you like ginger you’ll love it. The actual dish and mushrooms in the dish were super tasty. Also portions are huge!
Came here with a friend during the summer, we ordered the Buddha's Delight (罗汉斋) and Veg. Prawn with Walnuts (素沙汁核桃虾). Really good, I come here for lunch and dinner if I'm in Chinatown! The staff is very friendly.
The place had everything tasty and flavorful.. all vegan menu with amazing staff.. constantly smiling and helpful
It was a gateway to chinese food
Wow what an absolutely delicious meal!!
We had planned to visit this place when we looked at Chinatown from the UK before our visit and it did not disappoint. We were welcomed with a pot of complimentary Green Tea which was really appreciated given it was -5C outside.
We ordered a Low Mein, Sweet & Sour ‘chicken’, the Buddah noodles and another noodle dish and all 4 were sublime. Good size portions, fresh vegetables, all delicious and with very different tastes.
The service was attentive and friendly, we asked to tip and were told it was included - we managed to get them to rebill with a bigger tip as we were paying by card and they were so appreciative.
1 star deducted for atmosphere as walking through Chinatown there were so many intricately decorated places with lanterns etc - but really if you’re a veggie / vegan (or just like good food) this is the place to eat 👌
Go there and try it!
All vegan (unless otherwise marked) Chinese food in Chinatown with great service! My husband and I come here from Brooklyn at least monthly for dim sum because this place is amazing!
November 2025 update : we continue to frequent this place! Delicious!
There are two gender neutral bathrooms. One is larger with grab bars but not very wheelchair friendly. No step to enter.
Mapo tofu rocks,

Usually all chinese places give a liquid like water with tofu, but here it’s so savory, flavor filled, spicy and up for grabs!

The cedar fried rice tastes awesome, usually has a motor oil/wok taste to it - but thats what I bought it for.

Tasty chow fun, mild, flavor rich and yummy.

Beef coriander soup was okish.

Don’t get the dumplings, they seem fresh but just have a bland doughy taste.
For an appetizer, we got the jellyfish. It was so bouncy. The daikon and carrot slaw cut the saltiness nicely. For an entree, we got the chef’s special and asked for it very spicy. It did not disappoint!! We also got the lamb and mixed vegetables in garlic sauce. The lamb texture was on point, and the dish was very flavorful. Would absolutely recommend if you have dietary restrictions, they’re very accommodating!!
