The line was long but worth the wait. They are actually quite speedy, it only took longer because they had to move back into their spot after the parade. Their system is very efficient so once they were up and running the line went quickly. We had beef and lamb from another cart the day before that was fatty, grisly and hard to chew. The meat here almost melted in my mouth and the flavor was amazing! I wish I lived nearby so I could eat this weekly.

Check out the pictures and expect to see the long lines! Worth the wait and the time to try their food. Tried the beef and chicken platter that comes on a bed of rice, lettuce, tomatoes and you need both the white sauce and the hot/spicy/red sauce. Thank me later!

Probably the most famous Halal food truck in NYC. Interestingly when I was there at 8 pm, there was hardly any queue, about 5 people infront of me. Got the mixed bowl and the food was really delicious! The meats were tender and everything just tastes so good together.

Be warned that the red sauce is really spicy though.

There’s something unforgettable about eating from The Halal Guys on a cold NYC night. After walking through the city in the freezing air, surrounded by bright lights, traffic, steam rising from the streets, and people rushing in every direction, stopping for a hot plate of halal food somehow felt like the perfect New York experience.

The smell alone pulls you in before you even get close. Freshly grilled chicken, seasoned gyro meat, warm pita, rice straight off the grill, and that famous white sauce that somehow lives up to the hype. Everything tasted even better in the cold weather. The food was hot, flavorful, filling, and exactly the kind of comfort meal you want after hours of walking around Manhattan.

What made the experience special wasn’t just the food itself — it was the atmosphere around it. Standing on a busy NYC corner late at night with people from all over the world lined up together for the same thing felt strangely iconic. It’s one of those moments where you realize some of the best parts of New York aren’t fancy restaurants or expensive experiences, but simple moments that feel authentic to the city.

The portions were generous, the service was fast despite the crowd, and the entire experience felt energetic and alive. Eating that warm platter while the cold wind moved through the streets honestly became one of my favorite memories from the trip.

It may look like just another food cart at first, but The Halal Guys has earned its reputation for a reason. On a cold NYC night, that meal hits differently. Definitely one of the most satisfying and memorable food experiences I had in the city.

Got a beef platter today and something’s not right with the meat, it almost tastes fake and the texture is definitely off. Very disappointed. Recommended to a group of friends at work and honestly I’m embarrassed now.

The Halal Guys cart on 53rd and 6th has been running longer than most restaurants in this city will ever survive, which should tell you something. I'd walked past it probably a hundred times before finally stopping, which I now consider one of the more embarrassing admissions of my adult life as someone who eats around the city constantly. The line moves fast, the prices are almost insulting in the best way for Midtown, and the whole operation runs with a kind of quiet efficiency that makes you feel like you've been wasting your time standing in line at sit-down places.
I got the chicken over rice, which is what everyone gets, and also what everyone is right to get. The chicken is cooked flat and piled over yellow rice with lettuce and tomato on the side, and then comes the white sauce, which is creamy and garlicky and the correct answer to several life questions. I put a small amount of the hot sauce on, as advised by the person behind me in line who had clearly been here before, and small was still enough to require a moment of personal reckoning. A second visit happened not long after the first, and that time I went for the combo platter with gyro mixed in alongside the chicken, which is the move when you genuinely cannot decide. The falafel found its way onto the tray as well, crispy and warm, and I've since started treating it as a side situation to whatever else I order.
What I keep coming back to is that there's no performance to any of it. You order, you get a styrofoam container, you find a patch of sidewalk or a nearby ledge or whatever you can arrange, and you eat something that is actually delicious and filling in a city where spending fifteen dollars can produce a plate of food that looks at you apologetically. The whole meal costs less than a cocktail at most Midtown spots and is better than nearly all of them.

Used to be a must-go dinner spot whenever I’m in New York — mainly for its convenience and affordability. But after my latest visit, that might change.

The portion of chicken has noticeably shrunk — easily 25–50% less compared to what I used to get, even going back to around 2010. While I understand inflation and global factors (including ongoing geopolitical tensions), the reduced amount of protein just doesn’t justify the price of a regular bowl anymore.

On top of that, the takeaway white and red sauces weren’t available this time, which made the bowl feel dry and far less satisfying for anyone who enjoys that signature flavor.

With competitors like Adel’s just a couple hundred meters down the street offering better value, it’s hard not to reconsider my go-to option.

If you are looking for one of the most iconic street food experiences in Manhattan, the original Halal Guys at Times Square is a mandatory stop. It is easily one of the best halal options in New York, and despite the global fame and the constant lines, the food and taste remain truly awesome. We opted for the classic mixed platter and the shawarma, and the quality was exactly what you hope for—perfectly seasoned, hearty, and served with that legendary white sauce that really ties the whole meal together.

What makes this spot stand out in such a high-priced area like Midtown is the incredible value. The pricing is remarkably reasonable, especially considering the portion sizes and the prime location. It’s a high-energy, fast-paced operation that perfectly captures the grit and spirit of New York City street food. You aren't just paying for a meal; you’re participating in a local tradition that has managed to maintain its standards over the years.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a frequent traveler to the city, this is a reliable and delicious choice for a quick, high-quality meal. The service is efficient, moving through the crowds with impressive speed, and the consistency of the flavor is what keeps people coming back. It’s a five-star street food experience that I highly recommend to anyone navigating the Theater District. I’ll definitely be stopping by again on my next trip to NYC.

Good way to get a first impression of Halal cart! The chicken and rice is very flavorful and you really can't go wrong with it but I would not so it is nearly the best Halal car I've had now. I think the general sentiment is that the quality has decreased as they have gotten more popular. I am not sure if that is true but I do know that in comparison to Adele's, the chicken is not seasoned as thoroughly and the rice is not as fragrant. The carts are all over the same area so I highly recommend you try and determine for yourself.

Can’t-Miss Halal Platters from NYC’s Most Famous Food Cart!

The Halal Guys is one of NYC’s most famous halal food carts. They serve platters and pita sandwiches topped with freshly cooked chicken, beef gyro, falafel, and spicy BBQ chicken.

The Combo Platter (Chicken & Beef Gyro) comes with lightly spiced basmati rice, generous portions of meat, fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, cucumbers, and a piece of pita—so loaded you can barely see the rice. The mix of juicy meat, fresh veggies, creamy white sauce, and spicy hot sauce is simple, bold, and seriously satisfying!

By far the best food I had in NYC! 🥇
• The mixed gyro from The Halal Guys was top-notch—well-seasoned, perfectly cooked meat balanced with fresh veggies and sauces.
• Mildly spicy (the guy even warned me when I said I wanted spicy… mild is okay but I think I can tolerate the really spicy one)
• Huge serving—literally lasted me 3 meals. Amazing value for money.
• Served hot in a sturdy container with utensils and extra white sauce (yes please).
• Staff were super kind and fast.
• Highly recommended if you’re in NYC!

First time I came here was in the 2000’s. My cousin works nearby and told me about it. It just to be a shared spot. They only operate in evening, during the day it was another cart who operates there. They became wildly popular since.
Today they own 3 of the carts on that corner two of which are just for cooking the chicken and another just to grab soda.

Why it is popular is the size of serving for reasonable price. $13 for a huge bowl of food and the food is goood!
Beef I had was very tender.
The chicken is what they are known for.

Just a note. I like onions, but if you are going somewhere after do tell them to not put as much. They put a lot. If it is in the wrap it’s hard to remove it.

They do accept credit card.

Great place to go!

At some point I think New York was mainly hot dog carts. Now, it’s all halal carts. This Yellow shirt classic food stand has been there since 1990. Now this stand typically as a line. They have another stand right across the street. So the concept here is platters. As street food- you have chicken, beef, falafel as options. For my vegetarians, the falafel is made in a separate cart so it can be separated from the chicken and beef. Its made fresh so I had a wait. They came out with 12 piping hot falafels and it was worth it. For the platters you get rice, vegetables and then your protein. In my case, 6 piping hot falafels. On top of it is pita bread and then white and red sauce. The white sauce is a lovely blend of mayonnaise and yogurt. A perfect blending of Mediterranean and American cultures. The red sauce is spicy and should be taken in limited quantities. If you get this to go, they wrap it up for you and put it in a bag. We walked back to the hotel and our food had stayed warm. The rice was flavorful, and the veggies and falafel. Combined with the white and red sauce this was a perfect meal. It cost me $12 + tax. They take cash and card. This line I can be long but what I know is that it’s worth it.

Yes, this is the place. I’ve been a regular since 2019 and it has never disappointed. The chicken is always fresh and perfectly cooked, and the famous hot sauce (handle with caution!) is what truly makes the flavor unforgettable. I could have it any day!

On my recent visit after a couple of years, I tried the fries—they’re a nice addition but could use some seasoning. Still, the overall experience is consistently excellent, and it’s absolutely worth standing in line. Highly recommend!
