Sean was our server for tonight - amazing recommendations and lovely service….and all the food was so delicious! Especially loved the spicy wontons/dumplings - the skin was extra slippery which I never come across in restaurants nowadays. Perfect amount of spice to be enjoyable. Lovely ambiance too - I always come back to this restaurant :).

This spot made the “Top 10 Chinese Restaurants in NYC” list based on over 100 million ratings on Beli!! The Sichuan flavors here are bold, spicy, and super authentic—definitely a spot to come hungry with friends and share tasty dishes. Swing pork belly, La Zi Chicken, Crispy Sizzling Tofu, Ma La Lobster, and MaoXueWang are delicious!!

Also heard from the staff they now stay open late on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until 1 AM, which makes this even better for late night cravings!!

I’ve been wanting to try Mountain House in the East Village for a long time since it’s often mentioned as one of the best Chinese restaurants in NYC. While the food was good and the portions were very generous, none of the dishes we tried stood out as significantly better than other Szechuan restaurants I’ve had in the city.
That said, the portion sizes are great for sharing, especially if you go with a group, and the staff was very kind and accommodating. The menu is also extensive and has a lot of interesting options.
The atmosphere was honestly the most underwhelming part for me. Online photos make the space look quaint but spacious, but in reality it’s quite small and can feel cramped. Luckily we sat in a booth, but I imagine the middle tables might feel a bit chaotic when it’s busy.
Overall, I still really enjoyed dining here and would definitely come back to try more dishes.

Response from the owner

Hi Nicole,
Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re really glad you finally had the chance to visit us and that you enjoyed the food, generous portions and the kindness of our team. Your kind words about our staff and menu truly means a lot to us.

We also appreciate your honest feedback regarding the atmosphere and space. Being in the East Village, our dining room is indeed on the cozier side and it can feel lively during busy hours. We’re always working on ways to make the experience as comfortable as possible for everyone.

Next time you visit, please feel free to ask for a booth or a quieter table if available—we are always happy to accommodate whenever we can. And if you are looking to try some dishes that many of our regulars love, our team would be more than happy to recommend a few favorites.

Thank you again for visiting us. We hope to welcome you back again soon to try more dishes.

Had an incredible dinner at Sichuan Mountain House! We started with the cold noodles, which were the perfect refreshing kick-off to the meal.
The highlights were definitely the Mala Prawns (loved the fun gloves they provided to keep things clean!) and the Mapo Tofu, which had the perfect balance of spice and numbness. We also ordered the eggplant and green beans, which were cooked to perfection.
A huge shoutout to our server, Emma. She was amazing. super friendly and gave us some fantastic recommendations that really made our night. We’ll definitely be back!

Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the city! I’ve been here countless times & it’s family approved. The food is always consistent, and great service (shout out Emma!). Favorite dishes include the: clay pot beef, laji chicken, sweet & sour pork and the eggplant.

There’s a reason this restaurant has landed on the New York Times best restaurants list multiple years in a row - and it’s not just hype.

Mountain House is definitely an experience for spice lovers, as everything is very warm to knock your socks off. We ordered a spicy rabbit stir fry and their staple chicken sichuan. The rich, authentic flavors are undeniable. Every bite made us smile and the decor, even just for a moment, makes you forget you’re in an overly crowded, buzzing corner of Manhattan.

The service was extremely thoughtful and never overbearing. Reservations are AN ABSOLUTE MUST.

See you soon Mountain House.

Response from the owner

Mountain House is one of those places I wish I had tried sooner. The food here is outstanding, with bold flavors and the perfect level of spice in every dish we tried. Each plate was deeply seasoned and full of character without being overwhelming. The proteins were especially impressive, from the tender fish to the flavorful beef and perfectly cooked chicken. Everything tasted high quality and thoughtfully prepared. The menu offers a wide range of options, so there is something for every preference. You can really fill up here and leave feeling like you had some truly excellent Chinese food. I would absolutely come back again.

Probably one of the best and most authentic Chinese restaurants I’ve been to in New York.
Came here for dinner with my wife and a friend, and we ordered four entrees. The dishes were big, perfect for sharing, and the flavors were absolutely incredible.

The place was almost full, yet we arrived without a reservation and they still found us a table. The team was professional and fast once seated, the waiter poured us tea and left the pot on the table, which felt very thoughtful.

The restaurant itself is authentic and stylish, and even the small details stood out like the mouthwash station in the restroom, which was a surprisingly nice touch.
Highly recommended, I’ll definitely be back.

Response from the owner

Great restaurant with large portions!

We visited on a Thursday evening and waited about 15 minutes for a table. One quick heads-up: the food here is authentically spicy, so definitely be prepared for that Sichuan heat!

We ordered a few different dishes to share. I personally didn't love the cold chicken, as it was a bit too sour for my taste. The Sichuan chicken, on the other hand, was easily my favorite! We also really enjoyed the peppercorn beef and the steamed fish. While the flavors were great, the fish was almost too spicy at times—even for someone used to some heat.

Overall, the portion sizes are very generous, which I really appreciated. It's a great spot as long as you can handle the spice!

As tempting as it is, the swing pork belly appetizer is not worth it! It’s just bland steamed/boiled room temperature strips of non flavorful pork belly you can dip into this oil lard concoction that doesn’t taste that amazing at all. I ate two pieces and left the rest to my partner- who also wasn’t impressed. In fact, it tasted better dipped into the dumplings chili oil broth- which I would 10000% recommend! The pork and shrimp dumplings in chili oil were incredible- best I’ve had in NYC. It comes with a great broth to enjoy. Loved them so much I couldn’t get a pic till the end. The kung pao was a miss- wayyyy too sweet. And the yibin style ran noodles not very flavorful and cold, which I didn’t enjoy. We also got the twice cooked pork belly which was good. The service was phenomenal which is why I give three stars. Although there’s been quite some hype about this place for a while, I’ve had much better Szechuan cuisine in other restaurants in nyc. So I was not impressed. Except for the dumplings in chili oil. Would definitely recommend those.

Szechuan Mountain House is truly one of the most exciting and consistently delicious restaurants in the East Village. Every time I come here, I’m blown away by how flavorful, vibrant, and perfectly executed the dishes are. The moment you step inside, the ambiance sets the tone — dim, stylish, and buzzing with energy, but still comfortable enough to settle in and really enjoy your meal.

The food here is the real star. The heat level is bold without ever sacrificing flavor, and every dish feels thoughtfully crafted. The spices are aromatic, the textures are on point, and even classics taste elevated. Whether it’s a noodle dish, something braised, or one of their signature appetizers, everything arrives hot, beautifully presented, and absolutely packed with flavor.

Service is quick and efficient, even when the restaurant is packed (which is almost always). The staff knows the menu well and is great about offering suggestions if you’re stuck between dishes.

Portions are generous, prices are fair for the quality, and it’s the kind of place you finish your meal at already thinking about what you want to order next time.

If you’re craving authentic, spicy, and deeply satisfying Szechuan food, Szechuan Mountain House never disappoints. Highly recommend!

I will always come back to Mountain House when I need my spicy craving fixed. This is my 10+ time here and it is always satisfying after each meal. Every dish is a flavor bomb, portions are great, and a wide range of menu selection that keeps me coming back to try more dishes.

We always get the Lazi Chicken, fish in sour cabbage soup, and beef fried rice. Occasionally, we go back to the house chicken and swing pork belly for something more mild.

Overall, amazing food as always, service is great, and remember to make a reservation before coming although the wait isn’t usually too bad with 30 minutes to an hour. One time we came during Mother’s Day and they gave us jasmine tea pudding as complimentary dessert for mothers. Great service!

I went there super hungry, and our server was amazing — so attentive and friendly, which made the whole experience really enjoyable! I loved the fish soup — it was perfectly soft and flavorful. My friend and I thought we wouldn’t be able to finish all the food, but it was so tasty we couldn’t stop eating, haha! I also loved their stylish to-go bags. Definitely recommend this place!
