Solid Malaysian food with some creative dishes, though the restaurant is very noisy — difficult to have a conversation.

Favorites:

Nasi Lemak: Our standout dish. Excellent coconut rice with the perfect crispy anchovies, sambal, and accompaniments. My favorite of the night.

Wonton Lasagna: Tasty and unique fusion — be sure to add the accompanying soy sauce.

Other notes:

Asam Laksa (Anthony Bourdain’s favorite): Worth trying once for the tangy pineapple and spicy-sour broth, but the noodles were a bit soggy. I’d probably skip it next time.

Malaysian Curry (chicken + jasmine rice, 3 bowls): Pretty standard Thai-style curry — decent but nothing distinctive.

Laut delivers authentic Malaysian flavors in a lively setting. Great for food explorers, just bring earplugs or accept shouting across the table. We’d happily return for the Nasi Lemak and Wonton Lasagna.

Was missing food from Singapore and they delivered on all fronts. We had the nasi ayam, roti telur, and the laksa as well as had hot teh terik. All food was amazing and the ambience & music was awesome on a Saturday afternoon.
We had another great meal at Laut tonight! We have come 4 or 5 times before and always find the food to be tasty and made with fresh, good quality ingredients. And this busy restaurant has a really nice atmosphere as well. Our server tonight was Steven and he was great—attentive, helpful with recommendations and very pleasant. Each time we come we introduce this place to another friend who appreciates good food and no one is ever disappointed. Thanks, Laut!
Was recommended by By Doctor Roth who is a friend of the owner Mr. Mehta. Had An outstanding dining experience from start to finish. You can taste Chef’s magic touch in all dishes. The food were absolutely top-notch and rich in flavor, beautifully balanced, and clearly made with expertise and passion. Every bite reflected authentic Malaysian , Thai and Indian mix taste with top notch quality ingredients.
The vibe of the restaurant was classy yet welcoming & warming, creating the perfect setting for a memorable meal. The cocktail was dynamite. The staff were attentive, polite, and genuinely warm, their recommendation was excellent . adding to the overall 20-star experience. They served complementary desert as it was my friend’s birthday. Not to forget the hitting of the Gong as everyone join in singing happy birthday. I highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy exceptional Malaysian, Thai and Indian blend cuisine. Will definitely return. our waiter Steven was amazing . He serve us with a smile and was always willing to Recomend. He was excellent, Thank you bibi Gordon
The venue itself is genuinely lovely. Walking in, you get the feeling of a traditional Malaysian shophouse, almost as if you have been transported to the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, or Melaka. That said, some of the signage feels slightly out of place, creating more of a hawker-centre vibe even though the restaurant itself does not really resemble one.

Service was a little slow, and the food was solid overall. The menu leans heavily into Malaysian comfort food and hawker-style classics: familiar, satisfying, and deeply nostalgic. It is enjoyable, though not particularly inventive or memorable. Simply put, it is very good comfort food.

My biggest issue with the place is the pricing. This is comfort food, and while I enjoyed it, the cost feels surprisingly high for what is being served. It does not quite justify the overall experience. At this price point, I would expect either more refined or creative Malaysian cuisine, or, if the goal is an authentic street-food-style experience, prices that better reflect that down-to-earth spirit.
Laut’s menu spans southeast asian cuisines. My friend has been there a few times, so we went with her top recommended dishes.

The place was packed even on a weekday evening. Just a heads-up it’s pretty loud inside, and the tables are pretty close together. The prices are definitely on the higher side so come prepared for an elevated malaysian meal.

*Satay Chicken $16/4pcs **
This isn’t your regular satay chicken skewer because the peanut sauce is next level! So rich, nutty, and savory, with even more crunch from crushed peanuts on top.

*Roti Canai $11
Flaky yet pillowy, served with a vegan curry sauce. The curry was a bit watery, but still paired nicely with the roti.

*Ultimate Curry Laksa with Mixed Seafood $28**
The broth was SO GOOD we couldn’t stop sipping it! We went with the recommended egg noodles. Chewy, bouncy, and perfect for soaking up the broth. You can choose different proteins, and we picked mixed seafood which came with shrimp and squid.

*Nasi Lemak $30
Of course I had to try the malaysian national dish here. The coconut rice is lowkey addictive, especially with the rendang curry chicken. Though the portion felt a bit small for the price. We only got 3-4 small pieces of chicken. Worth noting it’s cheaper ($25) during lunch.

*Coconut Pudding $16
A light dessert after a rich meal. I was surprised it comes in a whole coconut! The silky, jiggly coconut jelly was fun to scoop straight from the shell, but nothing impressive flavor-wise.

*Teh Tarik (Pulled Tea) $8
*Sweet Thai Iced Tea $8
Both were very sweet and pretty strong on caffeine. I definitely felt it later and it kept me up all night…I preferred the malaysian pulled tea over the thai iced tea.
We got the iconic roti canai and it was absolutely delicious. The drunk man noodles were 10/10, we added shrimp and they were perfectly cooked. Nasi goreng was good too but not the highlight, felt very average compared to everything else. Teh tarik tea was interesting and flavorful. The vibe was really great in general and the servers were really warm and welcoming.
Good food but not a standout. The beef was tender and flavorful and the soup had a nice tanginess to it. However it’s not that memorable compared to other Malaysian restaurants I’ve tried in New York. It was also noticeably pricier and the portion of the beef was tiny compared to the price. Service was also lackluster. The female server wasn’t that friendly and I had to ask for water refills. I think for the price it’s not worth it.
Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned, and you could tell a lot of care went into the dishes. The flavors were bold but balanced, and nothing felt rushed or thrown together. The atmosphere was welcoming and the service was solid too. Overall, it was a great experience and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking to try Malaysian food or just want a good meal. Great date spot for me and my girlfriend!
Nice spot for Singaporean/malaysian food. Their satay ayam (chicken) was delicious and was quite close to the flavors I’ve been used to from living in Singapore. Same can be said for the roti canai (although it had a slightly bitter aftertaste likely due to burnt/overcooked roti but it was still enjoyable). The ultimate curry laksa was too sweet to be considered authentic, and the sweetness unfortunately overwhelmed the other flavors that should’ve been prominent from a traditional laksa. Nice that they offer a wide variety of noodle choices for it. The haianese roast chicken rice was good, but I liked the aromatic chicken rice more than the chicken dish itself. The mamak mee goreng was decent, however too salty and missed some traditional flavor profiles expected with mee goreng. Ended up paying ~$150 for two appetizers, 3 mains, 2 drinks (Thai iced tea and jasmine tea) so definitely don’t expect Singaporean/malaysian prices. Overall worth it if you’re craving Malaysian flavors in nyc, it’s hard to come by.
Laut Malaysian Restaurant delivers authentic Malaysian flavors with fresh, well-seasoned dishes and generous portions. Friendly service and a casual, welcoming atmosphere make it a great spot for a relaxed and satisfying meal.
We sat at the bar at Luat on a Friday evening, and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. There were two of us, and we ordered quite a few dishes to share. We started with the Murtabak, which was perfectly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and had just the right amount of spice. Next was the Nyonya fries—super crispy and incredibly delicious. We finished with the soft shell crab curry, which was rich, flavorful, and had a well-balanced level of spiciness. We also ordered two drinks, which paired nicely with the food. Highly recommend coming with a group so you can order multiple dishes and share. Definitely a great spot for a fun night out. Ben, the bartender was so amazing :)
I got the curry laksa with shrimp. I liked it! The broth was rich and creamy, although more mildly flavored than I expected, and there was a nice amount of noodles. The tofu puffs soaked up the broth really well, turning into little sponges of broth that exploded in my mouth. I will say, I've had better shrimp, but it still went well with the dish. I do wish the bowl had more cucumber and mint though, and I would've also enjoyed a bit more spice, but it was a good dish overall. They gave me some complementary spring rolls too which was a nice touch!

I also really liked the atmosphere in here, the interior design is very cool and ties in well with the food. My server was very sweet and attentive, he did a wonderful job. I'd recommend this place if you're in the area.
Really solid Malaya spot - overall 8/10. The noodle soup was clean but had great flavor. The nasi lemak was different from a typical but still yum. Roti was flaky and the curry it came with was super flavorful. The Thai iced teas were also solid. Would come back. ~$50/pp a bit pricey tho
I was so excited about visiting Laut but was sadly underwhelmed by the food. I had the sampler and a lackluster cocktail. My buddy had a chicken dish and left 1/2 of it on his plate. I did enjoy the coconut rice, and the service was great. Most of the reviews were so favorable that I think I'll go back one more time. I'll update this post once I do.
