Not sure what Portnoy tasted during his review but the pizza is not very good. I'm from Chicago but in recent years I've started liking NY style a little better than Chicago. Order a pepperoni pizza and the "fifty" pizza, fried zucchini, mozzarella sticks and garlic bread. Everything was good except the pizza. Seems they use can tomato sauce but I'm not sure. There's tomato chunks and not much flavor in the sauce. It was very greasy! The crust was good but we didn't enjoy it at all.

Best Pizza in NYC is understatement! John's is a New York institution! Try the white pizza & the meat lovers. Don't ask for pizza by the slice because it ain't that kinda place. And don't you dare ask for ranch dressing because the pizza don't need it & they don't have it. Eat their amazing pizza like a true New Yorker. Fold it in half and go for it!

Oh do ask for the Parmesan though. They keep that in the refrigerator

If you enjoy brick oven pizza, this will be some of the best you’ll ever have! We got “The Sasso” and would definitely recommend it. Didn’t wait more than 5 minutes to be seated. Super friendly staff. Prices are pretty affordable as well.

If Dave Portnoy is scoring it 9.3 and my hotel is a few blocks away I’m not missing this place. It was worth the hype, nostalgia, authentic the crispiest pizza I ever had with a nice tangy sauce. Guy serving Friday was a little rude but the place and pizza… top notch

I recently visited John's of Bleecker Street and had a fantastic experience. The restaurant has a warm classic New York pizza place vibe with a lively and welcoming atmosphere. It felt cozy and perfect for enjoying a relaxed meal. I ordered pizza for dine-in, and it was absolutely delicious. The crust was perfectly crispy, the cheese was fresh, and the toppings were flavorful and well balanced. The portion size was great, and the quality was definitely worth the price.

Overall, I had a really enjoyable visit and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic pizza and a great dining experience.

I want some amore of that pizza pie. This was a recommendation. First with a place that has such a history, following and a legacy as this place does it's hard to write about it, but I will do my best. This place screams authentic pizza parlour from the outside, and inside it's a picture perfect example all the way down to the aroma coming from the kitchen. From now on when someone says to me do you wanna go for pizza this is what my mind will recall pizza is. The staff is amazing and friendly and welcoming. You do have to order a full pie, but even when it's busy it's not that long of a wait. Everything is so very fresh and flavorful. This is what pizza should taste like. From the dough to the sauce to the cheese and toppings. Had a sausage, mushroom and basil and it was divine. The have wonder draft beer from Italy to wash down the amazing pizza, and it's a steal considering the price. Get your buddies together, go grab a booth and order up where I am sure the angels grab their pies from this is what a New York pizza is! This is be a staple place for each and every trip to the NYC!

If you’re looking for that classic NYC pizza experience, John’s of Bleecker Street never disappoints. We absolutely love the cozy booths and the nostalgic vibe of an old-school pizza shop, it really feels like stepping back in time in the best way.
The prices are reasonable, especially for the quality. The food is consistently delicious!!The meatballs were incredibly tasty, and the pizza paired perfectly with a glass of wine. It’s the kind of place that’s perfect for sharing and gabbing over a meal.
Whenever we have friends visiting, this is always one of our go-to spots. It’s become a tradition for us to grab a t-shirt for our guests before we leave. It makes for such a fun souvenir and a great memory of the experience.
A true NYC gem we keep coming back to.

Luckily we found a table in this crowded pizzeria and it's been a nice experience. I really wanted to try it out due to its fame and it didn't disappoint. Very tasty pizza peperoni, service ok. They only sell entire pizzas, no slices.

Definitely one of the best pizza experiences in the city. We ordered half plain and half mushroom, olives. As appetizers, we got garlic bread, beef meatballs and garlic bread. They were all great.

Really good garlic bread, some of the best! The cheese sticks are ok, average but the dip is delicious and the pizza is sol good. I think my favourite in new york. Their reputation is well deserved.

The bar was set high for this and Johns did not disappoint. I love pizza of all size shape and color but as for as thin crust NY style goes this was the best I had ever had. The sauce was unique and the cheese was great. The 20-30 minute wait was 100% worth it. I came for the classic pie but we also got an order of meatballs they were all beef and in a completely different sauce from the pizza and were also amazing. I give it a 9.3 out of 10 🤣🤣 and will definitely come back.

we came for a slice of authentic nyc pizza, that odd ball “one bite you know the rules” guy rated this place highly, so it was on our list. waited outside in the cold for 30 minutes, once we got inside and so I just have small and tightly packed the places we understood why. No complaints, pizza was great, seeing the guys in the kitchen, hustling pizzas out, and watching their system was entertaining and impressive. Would go back, can see why it’s popular. Definitely helped make our nyc experience with the kids compete

This NY style pizza was delicious, but a little bit on the pricier side. There was a line that we had to wait in outside, but it moved fairly quickly and they were able to accommodate us after 10-15 minutes. I highly recommend their classic cheese pizza. The kiddos loved it! Their atmosphere was cheery and friendly and our waiter was very kind. Bring cash if you go, as there is a 4% cash discount.

We visited John’s of Bleecker Street because a friend remembered loving the pizza years ago, and the atmosphere truly is amazing, historic, and beautiful.
The staff were very kind and welcoming, and my friends really enjoyed their pizzas.
As a vegan, I was disappointed that there were no vegan options at all, especially for such a famous and busy tourist spot.
It was hard sitting there watching everyone eat while having no option myself.
I truly hope they consider adding at least one vegan option in the future, as it would make this great place welcoming to everyone.

Response from the owner

We appreciate your feedback. Many of our regulars are Vegan. We do have vegan options such our marinara pizza that is dairy free and can be topped with any of our many vegetable toppings. We do not offer a Vegan cheese because it burns in our coal fired ovens. Our house salad and garlic bread are vegan friendly as well as our spaghetti and penne marinara dishes. They can also be be had with a garlic and oil sauce. Did you make your concerns know to the staff? It is not clear why you were unable to order an appropriate menu item. We hope to serve you and your friends again in the near future. Thank you.

Annother New York institution I couldnt miss. Once again, I was very impressed. This was my favorite slice I had in the city!
The place is comfy in a lived-in way, the staff is quick/efficient (mostly leaving you alone), and the pizza was perfect (especially if you season it).
I thuroughly enjoyed my experience and I hope to go back again.
Tip: The line builds fast so I would recommend a meal on the early side here.
