This lap cheong bamboo baked rice is my dream meal for under $11!!

Congee Village is a longtime chinatown staple (30 years strong!), serving family style cantonese dishes, dim sum, congee, and rice at reasonable prices. We also get a free mung bean sweet soup at the end.

I’ve been to their Flushing location for dim sum before, but their entrees are even better imo.

*Chinese Sausage Bamboo Baked Rice 金銀臘腸燉飯 $10.95 **
Such amazing value! So much lap cheong (chinese sausage/臘腸) and lap yuk (chinese cured bacon/臘肉) piled on top of seasoned rice. The rice soaked up all the oil from lap cheong and the sauces.

*Sha Cha Beef and Vermicelli in Casserole 沙茶牛肉粉絲煲 $22.95 **
Almost every table ordered a casserole, and I was surprised by how much beef they packed in. The vermicelli noodles held onto the sauce well. Easily a “rice thief” dish 🍚

*Sampan Congee 荔灣艇仔粥 $8.50 *
The congee came out boiling hot. It was velvety, and loaded with toppings like shredded duck. Definitely eat it fresh though, because the heat from the clay pot makes the bottom start to stick together quickly.

*Sauteed Lobster with Sticky Rice 糯米炒龍蝦 $48.95 (MP) *
Many people rave about their lobster sticky rice online. It came with so many huge chunks of lobster so you can get your money worth it. There might be more lobster than sticky rice. It was also easy to pick the meat out with just a fork.

*Fried Squid with Salt and Pepper 椒鹽鮮魷 $18.95
I wish it had a bit more salt and pepper, but otherwise the fried batter was thin and crispy. I’ve also never seen fried squid come in such huge, meaty pieces!

*Honey Walnut Shrimp 核桃蝦球 $24.95
Skip. Walnut shrimp is usually a go-to, but this one was just okay.

Not sure how many years this place has been a New York staple, but it's been a while since my last visit. After eating here again, it’s still just as delicious. Here is a quick review:

👑 Garlic Fried Chicken: Roast chicken. My friend highly recommended this and said it’s a must-order every time. The skin is super crispy, the meat is tender and juicy, and the sauce at the bottom has a great garlic flavor. Delicious!

👑 Salt and Pepper Shrimp Balls: Perfectly fried and seriously impressive. The batter resembles fried milk or a tempura texture—incredibly crispy with a subtle milky fragrance when you bite into it. The shrimp themselves are plump and snappy.

👑 Crab Meat with Tofu: They use Japanese egg tofu that’s been lightly fried first. It comes with a generous amount of crab meat, and the flavor is perfectly savory and fresh.

Emperor Chicken (Ba Wang Chicken): Steamed chicken with ginger and scallion oil. It’s good, but I definitely recommend the Garlic Fried Chicken over this one.

Lychee Bay Sampan Congee (Ting Zai Porridge): Packed with ingredients, rich, and leaves a great aftertaste. Excellent value at under $9.

Sizzling Black Pepper Beef Short Ribs: The meat quality was just average, but they gave a pretty generous portion.

Summary:
The Garlic Fried Chicken is absolutely amazing, and the Salt and Pepper Shrimp Balls have a wonderful milky aroma—both are absolute must-orders!

Also, I was shocked by the lunch prices when ordering. I can't believe there are still lunch specials for under $10 nowadays. Definitely trying that next time!

Consistently great Cantonese style dishes in a vibrant atmosphere. Been serving the Chinatown community for decades now and withstood the test of time because they continue to serve great quality family style dishes. I took away one star because they “forgot” our steak order somehow. The menu is expensive, and honestly you cannot go wrong with any item. But the classics and our favorite is always the fried squid and assortment of congees for its namesake! Be sure to make a reservation if you have a big party- you can even request for private room ( some with karaoke) if you meet the required minimum spending. Walking in during prime time lunch means a wait for sure. The place gets super loud and packed so be prepared to yell at each other to converse. All in all, a must try/go to restaurant in Chinatown!

Response from the owner

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and detailed review with photos! We're delighted that you enjoyed your service and food, especially the fried squid and our congee selection.
We also sincerely apologize for the missed steak order during your visit. That’s certainly not the experience we want for our guests, especially given the care we put into every dish. Your feedback helps us improve, and we’ll be sharing this with our team to ensure better attention to detail moving forward. It's always our goal to provide a delightful experience. We truly appreciate your support and can't wait to serve you again!

Congee Village is a good option for a family-style banquet, offering a wide range of dishes that match the flavors you’d expect from Chinatown classics, and in some cases, edge just a bit higher for some dishes and not so much for others. The menu has enough variety to satisfy everyone at the table while still feeling rooted in tradition.

They’re known for their congee, so it was a must-order, and it absolutely lived up to the reputation. Rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful, it’s easily one of the best bowls of congee I’ve had.

The space is clean and comfortable, and while the service was just okay, the food portions, value and congee make up for it. If you’re craving classic Chinese comfort food with a standout congee program, Congee Village is worth the stop

Food is decent, tastes the same as other Chinese eateries. Service was alright, they were busy and when we ask for something we had to ask multiple times to get it. We had to wait like 15 minutes for the receipt to come out after we asked. Atmosphere was alright, the decors and stuff were decent. I would say though the price is pretty high much higher than other places that would get you about the same thing. It’s recommended that you reserve a table if you have a large group of people and it’s for dinner time as lots of people come here.

As a Chinese person, this is exactly what hits the spot when you’re missing home food. The best dish is the sweet and sour pork. The beef and rice roll casserole is also excellent - the beef is very tender. The service is kind and food comes out very quickly. You cannot go wrong by coming here!

Been in NYC 12 years and this was my old go-to for college gatherings. Came back after 4–5 years and the taste is still spot on!

Lively Chinatown vibe, great for groups (~$40pp).
Crispy squab: crunchy skin, juicy meat
Ginger scallion fish: fresh, perfectly cooked
Garlic string beans: fragrant but a bit salty
Pork liver & lean pork congee: rich and comforting
Half garlic chicken: big portion, good texture

Still my comfort food pick over newer Cantonese spots.

I came here for a friend's birthday dinner and we had an amazing time. The interior of the restaurant is spacious and I love the cozy but very Chinese decor. Our waitress was so nice, easy to talk to, and fun. The service was really quick.

We ordered hot and sour soup, peking pork, string beans, honey walnut shrimp, beef chow fun, short ribs, beef stew and radish casserole, and salted fish and eggplant casserole. Everything was delicious. My favorites were their peking pork, string bean, and casserole dishes. The honey walnut shrimp was good but the portions were okay for a group of 9. The beef chow fun was a great portion but I wish there was more flavor. Loved the short rib. They gave us complimentary watermelon at the end, as well as birthday flan for my friends and I. Had a great time and I think this is the perfect spot for some casual Chinese food with a big group of people (We got 10 dishes and the total ended up being only $240, post-tax for a group of 9! We all left STUFFED).

Been here couple of times. It’s the best place to go when it’s chilly outside. The congee they served here is very professional. They have blended the rice so the texture is smoother. I also recommend their seafood. Always fresh.

I love coming here so much !! Their eponymous congees are so delicious and inexpensive (<$8 for anything in this economy?) and the bustling atmosphere (coupled with authentically brusque service) is a wonderful complement to the yummy food.

The restaurant itself is surprisingly large - lots of large tables suitable for hosting large groups and hallway of private rooms when you really need to go all out (and apparently at least one of them is equipped with karaoke, although I haven't had the chance to try it yet haha).

Some food highlights -

- cantonese sweet pancake: undescriptive name aside, this is actually SO delicious -- I order it every time I eat here. the lightly sweet filling and the coconut flavour go so well with the crispy pancake wrapper - we always wolf this down in an instant

- congee (obviously). I've tried the pork/preserved egg congee (classic), sampan congee, and mixed veggie congee. I love the pork/preserved egg one the most: not too thick or too watery, juicy and flavourful pork, and filling portion sizes. The sampan congee was a bit of a miss - hard to chew meat with lots of rubbery tendon + bland fish. Also a warning for any fellow cilantro-haters: they add cilantro as a garnish on top of the congee (!!)

- scallion pancakes: generic, but tasty. I like that they were thin and crispy (a lot of Chinese restaurants in the US make them wayyy too thick for my taste)

- xiaolongbao ("small juicy bun in shanghai style"): the wrappers were thick and broke easily. the fillings / broth were passable at best, not very flavourful

- stewed pork with preserved vegetables: the pork slices were tasty -- savoury and tender, although definitely saltier and oilier than I would have liked. The preserved veggies that the pork sat on were *really* oily (soaking up all the oil at the bottom of the bowl) and kind of bland otherwise

Price point is super solid for the quality and portion sizes, and while I'm not sure if I'd come here for general Chinese/Cantonese cuisine, their congees are hard to beat in NYC - and I'll definitely be back often :)

Really authentic Cantonese cuisine, every dish was incredibly delicious! Even back in China, it’s hard to find food this tasty and genuine. I definitely want to recommend this place to everyone. The only downsides were the service, which wasn’t great, and the cleanliness could be improved.

Food was great value for the price!!! Fried squid was a bit too oily so won’t order it next time. Supposed to be salt pepper fried squid but could not taste the pepper. Salted fish fried rice was oily too and no taste of the salted fish.

Other dishes were yummy and portions were large enough! Service was attentive and waiters had a good attitude for a Sunday evening! Atmosphere was peaceful but it would be better with some background music!

Overall it is good, I would stay away from the fried dishes as they are too oily.
