Good friends of mine have been recommending Chavela’s for a while, so I was glad I finally had the opportunity to try it — and it definitely lived up to the hype. I was honestly surprised by how busy it was for a Sunday night, but that only added to the energy. The vibe inside is great: dim, cozy atmosphere with really comfortable booths that make you want to stay awhile.

The food and service were both wonderful from start to finish. We started with the nachos and guacamole. I’ve never had nachos served in a disc shape before — they were excellent and really unique, though I’d be lying if I said I didn’t still slightly prefer traditional nachos. The margaritas were awesome and paired perfectly with the meal.

For my entrée, I had the carnitas dish, which was absolutely out of this world. It came with tacos, refried beans, and salsa, and every part of the plate was packed with flavor. We also tried the carnitas taco, shrimp quesadilla and the steak and shrimp fajitas — everything we had was incredible.

I’ll definitely be back. And if you go, I’d also recommend stopping at Ample Hills Creamery across the street afterward for dessert.

I saw this place on the Michelin guide- def worth checking out!!! There is a long queue down the street it’s so popular!!! Their chicken mole is the bomb. I got two mole tacos and a tinga taco, a sopa azteca and two birria tacos. They have an amazing habanero sauce, a lively atmosphere and delicious cocktails.

Service and atmosphere are nice if you want to hang out but do not expect to leave satisfied. I ordered the tuna ceviche and the Burria quesadilla. Didn’t photo the ceviche as I was not planning to leave a review. Was shocked however when they brought out the quesadilla.

It was so small! The meat was fine but the consume that came with it was all burnt spices and oil. I ate it as I don’t like to waste food but man. Just not great. Stick to the taco trucks

Date night on a beautiful Monday when the weather was 70° so we had to take advantage. The tuna ceviche was sooo good with a bit of spice from the jalapeño. Will definitely be back!

Outstanding - great service and server. No wait on a Sunday night. The Beef short rib special was incredible!! Also had the fajitas which also were spectacular. 10/10

The staff and service in general is great! The food was average-good Mexican but very expensive. (We had two Plato Dons and mixed fajitas. The guacamole and flan was everyone’s favorite!

If you’re looking for a nice ambiance and a comfortable place to sit, relax, and chat, this restaurant is a good choice. The atmosphere is inviting, making it a pleasant spot for spending time with friends or family.

However, if you’re expecting authentic Mexican food as described on their menu and throughout the restaurant, it may not meet those expectations. The dishes are quite far from traditional flavors and preparation.

As for the drinks, it’s a bit of a mix, some cocktails are well made and enjoyable, while others could definitely use some improvement in both balance and preparation.

Overall, it’s a good place for the vibe and conversation, but not necessarily for an authentic Mexican culinary experience.

Oh talk about staples in the neighborhood, Chavelas is definitely one of them. A great place for brunch, lunch or dinner they have been serving great Mexican Food from their corner on Franklin for years now. I had the pleasure to dine in for lunch recently.

Our server (Oscar I believe) was incredible. Knew the menu in and out and provided impeccable service. The staff overall were kind and made you feel welcomed.

The food was good as usual. Chilaquiles, smoked ribeye quesadillas and a few other items were order. The smoked Ribeye Quesadilla was a major hit! Keep that as a staple guys.

If you happen to be around the Brooklyn museum and looking for a place with great value, go support Chavelas

Apologies! Food was so good couldn't take pics!

Excellent restaurant.
We celebrated a birthday here in November with a large group, and both the service and attention to detail were impeccable. The staff handled everything smoothly and made us feel very well taken care of.
The food was very good overall, and the desserts were especially delicious. They were also very accommodating with special requests for the birthday guest, which made the evening even more enjoyable.
The atmosphere is relaxed and cheerful, with tasteful décor, making it an ideal place for celebrations or simply a pleasant meal. We had a wonderful time and would happily return.

Can’t believe it’s taken me so long to write this gem a review. Chavela’s is such a Brooklyn treasure. We have never had a mediocre meal. Everything from the mainstays to the specials are delicious and made with heart. Their margaritas are also incredible. Highly recommend the mole. The service is always warm and friendly. Another plus is that the fun atmosphere could definitely warrant a more dressy date night, but many people also go completely casual and we have felt comfortable doing so as well. If there was only one restaurant I was able to recommend to a traveler to Brooklyn, it would be Chavela’s. Nothing compares!

Best part of the restaurant is the atmosphere, the negroni was a 10 but the labios rojos is a regular mezcalita, a basic drink just a beautiful presentation. The food was real basic mexican food, because of the fame I was expecting a little more. I give the food a 5. We had chilaquiles, tostadas, huarache, esquites and Plato don. Dont have any of them maybe other plates are better. We also had bread pudding it was a 4. Music was good and our server great!

Great neighborhood gem! I’ve visited here a few times for happy hour and the margaritas are strong. The food is really good and the overall ambiance is beautifully rustic. The decor feeds into the vibe which I really enjoyed. Some favorites were the steak and pork tacos, esquite and choco-flan! Amazing!

A nice elevated Mexican neighborhood restaurant in the crown heights / prospect heights area. As we walked in, this place immediately got a line out the door, it gets packed on the weekends!

The food was solid. The Plato don Carne was quite good, the chicken imo was better than the steak. The enchiladas mariscos was okay. The shrimp and crabmeat were good. Salmon was an odd choice for a filling. Mole was standard mole, nothing too insane. The pozole was one of the better pozoles I’ve had. The ceviche was fresh and delicious! Salsas were fine and the guacamole was fresh.

Overall, I think I would come back and try some different stuff.
