I’ve officially accepted my fate—I will be stopping here every single time I pass by. This bakery has me in a full sugar-induced loyalty contract.

The chocolate babka is hands down the best I’ve had. No debate. I even had a full discussion with my boss (a true babka aficionado), and we both agreed this is the spot. Rich, perfectly layered, with that deep chocolate swirl that feels borderline illegal.

This time I also picked up banana chocolate chip bread, a baguette, chocolate rugelach, and matchalach—and wow. The rugelach deserves its own spotlight. My boyfriend took one bite, froze like he’d seen a vision, then silently got up, left his phone behind, and came back with an entire bag to take home. That alone should tell you everything.

Everything here tastes fresh, indulgent, and made with care. Honestly, the only downside is that it’s not closer to my apartment… but maybe that’s for the best, because my fitness routine would not survive this level of temptation.

If you love baked goods, this place is non-negotiable.

Response from the owner

Hi Svitlana, thank you so much for the 5-star review! It made our day to read about how much you love Breads Bakery in Union Square. We are so happy you love the babka, baguette, banana cake, rugelach, and much more. We look forward to welcoming you back soon and making you a part of our family.

With Babka Love,
Your Friends at Breads Bakery

I’m reviewing the service, as I never had the opportunity to try the products.

On the second day of the snowstorm, I walked there because the posted hours indicated the store was open until 8 PM. When I arrived shortly after 5 PM, there was a sign stating it had closed early.

Closing early due to weather is completely reasonable. That was not the issue.

The issue was how it was handled. There was still an employee inside. I had just walked through a snowstorm, my shoes and socks soaked, specifically to support this business given the challenges it has faced over the past several months. I simply wanted to ask whether any other locations in the city were still open so I could take a taxi there.

Instead, I was met with a flat “We’re closed,” and a refusal to engage at all.

It was also my last day in Manhattan, so there was no opportunity to return.

A brief explanation or even basic courtesy would have changed the experience. Instead, the message was clear: the effort didn’t matter. I won’t be making the effort again next time I’m in town.

Response from the owner

Hi Mark, we are so sorry to hear about your experience in the storm. Breads Bakery in Union Square stayed open on Monday to serve the neighborhood, but we did close early for the safety of our team. We posted the hours on our social media as well as onto our Google profile as soon as we decided to close. If you reach out to info@breadsbakery.com, we would love to hear more about your experience and show you how much it means to us that you stopped by Breads during your trip to New York. We would love to make it up to you and make sure this doesn't happen again.

With babka love,
your friends at Breads Bakery

The chocolate Babka is incredible. Came here just for this and I’m so glad I did. Delicious and chocolatey, yet light because of the bread like dough. Even as I was walking someone saw me with a breads bakery bag and said “did you get the chocolate babka?” So clearly if you know you know. Now you know too - go try it!!

Response from the owner

Hi Loorrii, thanks so much for your great feedback on Breads Bakery in Union Square! We are so glad you stopped by the bakery for the best babka in New York. We look forward to seeing you in the shops again soon, maybe for some of our great hamantaschen!

With babka love,
your friends at Breads Bakery

Babka only comes in whole pre-packaged loaves, so take it home and warm it up! So rich and chocolatey and gooey. It keeps well and stays moist. I didn't find the rugelegh that unique tasting, just a chocolatey croissant. It's still tasty, but the babka was definitely the highlight for me!

Response from the owner

Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for providing such a great review of the best chocolate babka in New York and the chocolate croissant! We are so glad you had a chance to stop by Breads Bakery in Union Square for coffee and breakfast and we hope you stop by again soon for lunch with friends or to bring fresh loaves of bread home to your family.

With babka love,
your friends at Breads Bakery

I ordered online 3 days ago on January 13th. Today I received my bread! Unbelievable service! The presentation is lovely! I tried the Chocolate Babka first and am in love. Such rich chocolate and flaky bread. The Life gives you Lemons cake is moist with a delicate lemon flavor topped with just the right amount of crumble. And the carrot cake is a perfect combination of carrots, raisins, nuts, and spices. I'm sorry for the reason we learned of this NY company, but so thrilled we got to experience their amazing product! G_d's richest blessings on you for much continued success!

Response from the owner

Hi Encounter Leadership, thank you so much for your feedback on Breads Bakery. I am so glad you had a chance to order online to spread the love outside of New York! We are humbled by your support and look forward to hosting you at the bakery next time you are in Union Square or any of our shops in New York!

With babka love,
your friends at Breads.

Absolutely love love LOVE Breads. We recently revisited the Union Square location to pickup one of their incredible hot chocolates. Normally Breads Bakery is super consistent and high quality, but I believe they had ran out of their regular batch of hot chocolate when we visited. Normally rich, slightly thick, piping hot, with a great balance of sweetness and flavour, and a melty homemade marshmallow. This time they made our hot chocolate to order, instead of pouring from their main batch (maybe it was low or empty?). Sadly, it was milky, sickly sweet, and luke warm. A real shame when we know how amazing their hot chocolate normally is! I'll always recommend Breads Bakery - just try and make sure you get their real hot chocolate if you stop by for this seasonal staple!

Response from the owner

Hi, Lily. Thank you so much for your loyalty to Breads Bakery, and specifically to the Hot Chocolate. We understand it can be disappointing when the batched hot chocolate sells out. As you know, it is quite popular this time of year, so, while we do our best to keep up with demand, this can happen later in the afternoon or evening sometimes. We will be happy to serve you a wonderfully warm and rich cup of hot chocolate next time you come by the Union Square Bakery, and we will look forward to seeing you there. —Megan, Guest Experience Manager

It’s a bakery in the Chelsea district, and it’s really excellent, well-reviewed, and we enjoyed breakfast there three times. We tried a variety of specialties, like different kinds of croissants, pain au chocolat, and even yogurt. Everything was delicious, and the price is typical for New York, quite reasonable. My experience was definitely very positive, especially because of the great customer service. When I ordered a croissant and received the wrong one, they offered it to me for free and still gave me the correct croissant, which was a wonderful touch. It’s a welcoming, cozy place that feels like home, and it’s highly recommended. It’s a lovely bakery in a beautiful New York neighborhood, and the pricing is definitely average

Response from the owner

Hi Thomas, thank you so much for your amazing review of Breads Bakery - we're so glad you joined us three times for breakfast in Union Square. Our pastries and other breakfast options like egg sandwiches and yogurt make it a perfect spot to try something new every day. We look forward to welcoming you back into our home soon!

Oh, where do I even begin with Breads Bakery in Union Square? This gem of a spot turned my casual afternoon stop into an unforgettable treat! As a bakery aficionado, I was immediately drawn to their Jerusalem Bagel Stick – a sesame seed-crusted breadstick generously filled with aromatic za'atar and creamy feta. The first bite was an absolute delight: the crunchy exterior gave way to a soft, savory interior bursting with herbal zest and tangy cheese. It's not just bread; it's a flavor adventure that transports you straight to the streets of Jerusalem! I even provided some videos showing what this incredible bread looks like – you have to see it to believe it, and I highly encourage everyone to give it a try.

To elevate the experience, I paired it with their Super Fruit Tea – a vibrant, antioxidant-packed brew with notes of berries and citrus that originally comes unsweetened. We added a small amount of sugar to enhance its natural flavors, and the subtle sweetness perfectly complemented the bagel stick's bold spices, creating a harmonious balance on my palate that left me craving more. And the atmosphere? Warm and cozy, with the scent of fresh-baked goods wafting through the air and just the right amount of bustle to make you feel alive yet relaxed. It's the kind of place that begs you to linger, sip, and savor.

What truly set this visit apart was the exceptional service from Louis at the counter. His politeness, professionalism, and genuine kindness made me feel like a valued guest from the moment I walked in. He patiently guided me through the menu and offered spot-on recommendations tailored to my tastes. If you're visiting, do yourself a favor and chat with Louis – his personalized suggestions will make your experience even better!

In a city full of bakeries, Breads Bakery stands out as a must-visit. Based on this delightful outing, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking quality baked goods, great vibes, and top-notch service. I'll be back soon – five stars all the way! 🌟🍞

I have tried chocolate babka from Kossars and Russ & Daughters, but the best I've had so far is from Bread's Bakery! I love my chocolate babka to be dense and loaded with chocolate. Bread's Bakery delivers on both! Definitely the best!! Plus, the place is immaculate and everything is organized. I can't wait to go back and try some of their other delicious delights!

Response from the owner

Signs announcing that this bakery has been awarded best baguette and best croissant are all over the walls of this bakery with good reason. Upon entering, you’re confronted with a really mesmerizing display of breads and pastries, and the bakers in-store are happy to discuss their products and help you make a selection. Because I am limited to the confines of my human organs, I could not eat everything and picked an almond croissant and a chocolate rugelach. The almond filling was delicious and smooth, and nothing was too sweet: completely perfect. I’m a little traditional with rugelach, and I think this felt a little more like a mini chocolate croissant to me, but it was delicious nonetheless! Will be returning.

Response from the owner

Thank you for this wonderful review, Katherine! We too wish we could eat everything at the Bakery every day. Lucky for you, the Bakeries are all open 7 days a week so that you can keep coming back again and again until you've tried every croissant, sandwich, bread, cookie and coffee your heart desires. We can't wait to hear what you'll try next. See you soon!

With Babka Love,
Your Friends at Breads Bakery

Popular bakery on the ground floor of an apartment complex. Fragrant even before you step in, it’s bustling with visitors in line to check out. Frequently restocked shelves of different pastries. The palmiers here were a lovely treat to get, petite but full of buttery sweet flavor. Staff are prompt, courteous and knowledgeable. It’s fast paced inside but wonderful to smell everything.

Response from the owner

Went to the Union Square location- lives up to its reputation as a go-to spot for artisan breads and delectable sandwiches.

We started with their sourdough bread to go, which is a standout. The slow-fermented organic sourdough had a perfect balance of tangy flavor and a chewy, airy crumb, encased in a golden crust. If you’re a sourdough enthusiast, this is a must-try.

The olive and cheese breadsticks were another highlight. And we also got croissant and palmiers were superhit. They were a fantastic snack on their own.

We sat and I ordered the egg salad sandwich. My wife ordered the roasted bell peppers sandwich with cream cheese on sourdough bread was the star of the meal. The roasted bell peppers were sweet and smoky, paired beautifully with the rich, tangy cream cheese. The sourdough bread provided a sturdy yet soft base that soaked up the flavors without falling apart. The combination was simple yet executed with such precision that every bite was a delight.

The staff was friendly and efficient, making the experience even more enjoyable. Prices are on the higher side, as expected for an artisan bakery in NYC, but the quality justifies the cost.

Response from the owner

Total waste of money. Insane you buy an almond croissant and you get neither of the distinctive traits that makes a pastry an almond croissant: the studded almond crust on top, and the almond filling inside. My crust had literally two tiny flakes of an almond. That’s it. 2 shavings. And absolutely nothing inside. Even as a basic croissant this sucked, it was flat and had no lift or air inside. Staff were nice but they can’t save this total disappointment of a pastry.

Edit: In response to the reply, there was nothing inside. Zoom in on the pics and judge for yourself.

Response from the owner

Mick, we're truly sorry to hear that your experience didn't match your expectations. The Almond Croissants are generously filled with Lubeca Marzipan and an Almond Cream before a second bake, which gives them that caramelized crunch. If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out directly to discuss further.

With Babka Love,
Your Friends at Breads Bakery

Very tempting butter aroma, the croissant was really good, with almond filling inside and a cookie-like crispy outside. Maybe the croissant was so good that the cinnamon roll looked ordinary. The store also sells sandwiches, lunch salads and soups, with a lot of choices. It is a bakery that has won many awards, I will come back to buy croissants and try other foods.

Response from the owner

Hi Louise. It’s wonderful to hear you found the Almond Croissant delightful—thank you for the thoughtful feedback! The salads, sandwiches and soups are great for lunch and, like you said, there are many options so you can come back again and again and taste something new every time. See you soon!

With Babka Love,
Your Friends at Breads Bakery
