I had a fantastic dinner at Blue Willow 夜来湘 in Midtown West last week. This stylish Hunan restaurant has a beautiful, dimly lit retro Shanghai vibe with elegant Chinese lamps, sophisticated decor, and a lively yet intimate atmosphere that feels special.
I started with the excellent pork soup dumplings, which had thin wrappers and rich broth. The house-smoked bacon with peppers and garlic was smoky, spicy, and incredibly flavorful — a true standout. We also loved the mapo tofu and the fresh cucumber salad. Everything carried that bold, fragrant Hunan heat and balance. Service was warm and attentive.
It’s a wonderful spot for authentic spicy Chinese food in a refined setting. Highly recommend Blue Willow if you enjoy bold flavors. Five stars.
Helpful tips: Make a reservation as it can get busy, especially on weekends. Hunan dishes are quite spicy, so let your server know your heat preference. The smoked bacon and soup dumplings are must-orders. It’s conveniently located near Fifth Avenue and Central Park, perfect before or after shopping or sightseeing.

Response from the owner

That smoky bacon with peppers getting a shoutout made my night — it's one of those dishes that just captures everything we love about Hunan cooking. So glad the whole meal hit the way we intended, bold flavors and all, and that the space felt as special to you as it does to us. We can't wait to have you back at the table soon! 🥢

Food is amazing and service is good. Great authentic Chinese food especially if you love spicy. Very nice environment!

Response from the owner

Victor, so glad the spice hit the way it should — that's exactly the kind of cooking we pour our hearts into here. Come back anytime, there's always more on the menu to explore! 🌶️

Excellent time on a Saturday Night! Traditional Chinese food done right, and the pork soup dumplings were out of this world. Hunan Stir Fried Noodles and Classic Fried Rice were also next level delicious. Staff was very accommodating and friendly and service was quick. The atmosphere was welcoming; I can be a picky eater sometimes but for the price range here, you can't do better for Chinese in this neck of the woods.

Response from the owner

Ken, so glad you had a great Saturday night with us — those soup dumplings have a way of winning people over! It means everything to hear that even a picky eater left fully satisfied, that's honestly the best kind of compliment we can get. Can't wait to have you back at the table again soon 🥟

Get the Peking Duck. Get the Dan Dan. Get some cocktails. You will have a fantastic time!
The staff were attentive and friendly, the service was quick. The food was stellar!
Will come back often.

Response from the owner

Thomas, you basically just wrote our menu in three lines and we are absolutely here for it 🫶 The duck and dan dan with cocktails is honestly the move, and hearing that the whole vibe — food, service, speed — came together for you means everything to us. See you again soon, we'll be ready!

Blue Willow has been a go-to for years and I’m just now getting around to posting a review. 😅

Every friend I’ve brought says the same thing: just as good as the more popular spots, if not better, without the chaos and long lines.

Order-wise, you really can’t miss, but I keep coming back to the salt and pepper prawns, ma ma peppercorn fish, mountain baked fish, mapo tofu, and pickled pepper chicken. Cocktails are always on point too.

And honestly, the service deserves a shout. Fast, relaxed, and refreshingly unpretentious. I live nearby. Pretentious service is common. Not here.

Overall: 9/10

Response from the owner

Tim, the fact that you've been coming for years before finally dropping this review somehow makes it mean even more to us 😊 Salt and pepper prawns, mountain baked fish, mapo tofu — you clearly know the menu well, and knowing you keep bringing friends who leave feeling the same way is exactly what we're here for. See you next time, neighbor.

the food was amazing, we got this miss lou's beef stew and it was incredible. our group also was obsessed with the interior design! our server KAMA was super sweet too and gave us free baijiu shots for the bday girl

Response from the owner

Kathy, this genuinely made my night — Miss Lou's beef stew is one of my absolute favorites and I love that your group felt that too. Sounds like Kama took such good care of you all, which is exactly the energy we want every table to feel. Wishing the birthday girl all the best, and we cannot wait to have your whole crew back with us again! 🥂

Walked in to place an order for lunch and was politely greeted. I asked if my meal could be customized to which the hostess responded it could not. I tried to inquire as to why (I wanted the skin taken off the shrimp and seasoned/cooked without shell) and was told “they can’t make it like that”.

I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp with a side of rice. The meal comes with 6 shrimp that have been cooked and seasoned with the shell on. It’s different for sure and a bit strange to have to peel off this thin plastic texture skin from the shrimp.

All of the seasoning on it is cooked to the skin and once you take it off to eat (which gets messy beware) you loose all the flavor. Would have been nice if they offered this without the shell to accommodate guests and it would for sure taste better.

Response from the owner

Silhouet, that's genuinely fair feedback and I hear you — salt and pepper shrimp is traditionally cooked shell-on because the seasoning crisps right onto it, but you're not wrong that it can be a tough eat if you're not used to it, and our team should've taken a moment to explain that instead of just saying "we can't." We're going to do better about walking guests through the dish so you know what you're getting into before you order. Come back and give us another shot — I'd love for you to leave full 🙏

Phenomenal meal. They took me in as a solo walk in on a Sunday night. The service was amazing, quality of food was top notch. Can’t wait to come back!

Lunch at Blue Willow was great. We tried the noodles and the cucumber salad both fresh, well-seasoned, and clearly authentic Hunan flavors. Noodles had good texture and depth, cucumber salad was crisp, garlicky, and perfectly balanced. Service was quick and friendly. Solid Midtown lunch spot.

Great place to eat dinner with friends. Ambience and lighting were on point! I would definitely come back to get the Sesame Butter icecream again.

I am definitely going to be trying out their sister restaurants too.

Everything was mid except the garlic eggplant and ginger scallion fish. I liked the actual vibes of the place tho. The audience wasn’t very Asian. Prob won’t come back

- Yellow beef: 5/10, lacked flavor despite appearance. Not spicy at all even though it had three spicy pepper symbols on the menu. Disappointing
- Ginger scallion poached fish fillet: 9/10, I liked this a lot. Good flavor, no bones, tender
- Chengdu dan dan noodles: 6/10, dry, and flavor was okay
- Garlic sauce eggplant: 11/10, loved this!! Great flavor
- Sesame butter ice cream sundae: 3/10, so disappointing. Just vanilla ice cream with sesame seeds on top 😐
- Pumpkin mochi cakes: 2/10, got catfished. Thought this was the flat pan fried pumpkin cakes based on the menu picture and description. Flavor was bland, and it was more like a steamed tangyuan

Excellent food. The mapo tofu with rice was amazing (better like spicy though). The hunan stir fry noodles might be the best noodles my wife and I have had (we’ve had a lot of noodles 😅)

Very nice atmosphere, very fast cook times. Can’t recommend enough.

Great vibe, awesome food. If you're looking for some authentic family-style Chinese cuisine, this place is it. They serve Hunnan provincial food (which is often spicier than Szechuan food).

Standout dish was the Spicy Sauteed Intestines (sounds gross but it's one of those things where you have to try it to understand). Love the included lotus root.

Took awhile to be seated but they do have some bar seating downstairs too. Will definitely be back! 🌶️ ❤️

I have to say, this place truly exceeded my expectations. My friend and I had just finished visiting Central Park and were looking for a casual lunch spot when we walked in. The atmosphere immediately caught our attention — it felt like stepping into a high end restaurant in 1920s Shanghai: elegant and classic.

We ordered two lunch specials (the portions were quite generous) and a house special eggplant and pepper dish. Everything tasted very authentic and was super 下饭 (the kind of dishes that make you want to eat more rice). The young lady who served us was also very helpful and attentive.

We loved the entire experience and will definitely come back to try their xiaolongbao and spicy fried shrimp — the table next to us ordered those and said they were delicious.

Went with my colleagues for an outing and this place was pretty bomb. The opening period theme gives vibrant vibe that is both classical and suave. The food was great and the service was decent. It gets pretty full so you know it's a popular spot. On average the food is bit spicy so take note. Overall a strong recommend.
