Really enjoyed my dinner at Barn Joo Union Square. The beef combo was super satisfying and all the cuts tasted fresh and juicy without being overly seasoned. The cheese corn was honestly addictive, especially with the mushrooms and broccoli mixed in. I also loved how soft and comforting the steamed egg and tofu soup were. We added the truffle fries and they were thick, crispy outside, fluffy inside, and surprisingly filling. The atmosphere felt much more relaxed than the usual busy KBBQ spots, so it was nice taking our time grilling and eating. They even had a little lottery wheel at the entrance and we got a free drink, which made the experience extra fun.

Response from the owner

Happy hour turned into a frustrating 90 minutes.

The oysters were the first red flag — small. Then wine - smelled odd and tasted really cheap. But I pushed through, which I shouldnt have. Until this point, i havent even seen my server. The food running and water running guys took and delivered my order.

Chicken wings were acceptable. Still hungry, I tried repeatedly to get the lunch menu (available until 5PM) and was brought the dinner menu every time. I asked for 3 times.

Eventually I gave up and ordered a happy hour roll: $13 for four tiny pieces, essentially half a standard roll. Not great value.

No utensils, no napkins with my food, and the staff who were present — busboys, water runners — weren't able to help with menu or service requests. There seemed to be a disconnect between who was working the floor and who was actually accountable.

I spoke to the manager before leaving still hungry even after spending $50 on food and drinks that were supposed to be happy hour value.
They were receptive, which I appreciated. But food, drinks, and basic service misses are hard to overlook. Will need to see meaningful improvement before I'd come back.

Barn Joo NYC absolutely exceeded expectations. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is energetic yet laid-back—perfect for a night out with friends or even a casual date. The food is next level: every dish is packed with flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. The Korean fusion concept really stands out, especially their shareable plates.

The drinks are just as impressive—creative, refreshing, and dangerously easy to enjoy. If you like cocktails that don’t taste overly strong but still hit, you’ll love it here.

Service was top-tier. Staff were friendly, attentive, and knew the menu well, giving great recommendations without being pushy.

Overall, Barn Joo delivers on all fronts: atmosphere, food, drinks, and service. Easily a 5-star experience and definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to.

Stopped in during a downpour for a quick happy hour drink, and it felt like we had the place almost to ourselves. Quiet, relaxed, and a nice break from the chaos outside.

Their happy hour is definitely worth checking out—solid deals on both drinks and food. I ordered the baked dragon roll with a pint of Sapporo, and the combo really hit the spot. The roll was warm, flavorful, and nicely balanced, while the beer was crisp and refreshing.

Service was friendly, but a bit slow to start. It took some time to flag someone down to place an order, though once we did, everything came out quickly. One odd moment—someone at the table next to us actually left without paying because no one checked on them for a while, which says a lot about the pacing.

Overall, I’d still come back for happy hour if I’m in the area—great value, good food, just be ready to wave someone over.

Response from the owner

We appreciate you sharing your experience, Svitlana. It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere during a downpour, as well as our happy hour offerings. Your feedback about the baked dragon roll and Sapporo is greatly appreciated, and we’re glad they hit the spot for you.

We sincerely apologize for the slow start with service and appreciate your understanding. Our team will certainly take your comments into consideration to improve on pacing and attentiveness. We hope to welcome you back soon for another happy hour visit.

Super cozy spot to take friends for some elevated Korean food. For starters, we had their truffle fries and crispy tofu from the tapas menu. Both were tasty but the crispy tofu was a real standout. I tried the Kimchi Fried Rice for my entree and it was quite balanced. Perfectly spicy and not overly salty like some other establishments.

Drinks were quite expensive, and frankly above what I was willing to pay for them. We tried the apple + pear infused soju, which was somewhat underwhelming. A mason jar-sized drink was $25.

Would highly recommend either going for all shareable tapas or all separate entrees, (skipping the drinks) if you're looking for a tasty bite at a more affordable price.

Response from the owner

Thank you for sharing your experience, Viggy. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and found our crispy tofu and Kimchi Fried Rice to be standout dishes. It’s wonderful that you appreciate the balance of flavors we strive for.

We understand your concerns regarding the pricing of our drinks and will take your feedback into consideration as we continually seek to improve our offerings. Your suggestion about focusing on shareable tapas or separate entrees is appreciated and will certainly help future guests. We look forward to welcoming you back for more delightful tastes.

Well designed concept. However, the cocktails are ripoffs with lots of ice priced at around over 20 bucks. I had the Black Pink and it was not worth it. The Makgeoli, however, was worth it! We got a whole kettle of alcohol for the same 20 bucks. The tuna tartare was all right, a bit bland, and the Sundubu tasted like Shin Ramen powder was added in. The menu needs more variety of tapas share plates.

Response from the owner

We appreciate your detailed feedback on your recent visit to Barn Joo Union Square. It's great to hear that you enjoyed our concept and found the Makgeoli to be worth the price.

However, we sincerely apologize for your disappointment with the cocktails and dishes you mentioned. Your comments regarding the tuna tartare and Sundubu have been noted, and we understand the importance of flavor and variety. We are always looking to improve our menu and your insights are valuable. We hope you will consider visiting us again to experience any new additions we implement.

Very overpriced and mediocre korean food—better to walk to K town and get something there. The bibimbap was just okay, it lacked flavor, crispness, or freshness of other spots. To eat it you needed the gochujang, which was also sort of plain. The kimchi and croquettes were fine, soup was not bad, creamy udon got tiring to eat.

For the food id give it 3 stars (not too bad) but because of the prices I have to give it 2. Service wasnt great, had to chase down someone to get the bill after waiting for a while.

Response from the owner

We appreciate you sharing your candid feedback, Jun Simons. It's disappointing to hear that your experience with our dishes did not meet your expectations, particularly with the flavors and the quality you anticipated. Our team is committed to providing authentic and enjoyable Korean cuisine, and we apologize for falling short in this instance.

We also value your comments regarding the service, as timely attention is crucial. Your insights are essential in helping us improve. We would welcome the opportunity to make it right and encourage you to reach out to us directly. Thank you for your input, and we hope to have the chance to serve you better in the future.

I came here for dinner on a Friday night, not my first time at this location. This place gets crowded so make a resy if possible; it is a bit expensive. Food isn't too salty, which is great. They don't distribute banchan / side dishes.

Service was slightly slow but I chalked it up to the restaurant being busy. Ordered the truffle fries (wish it had a bit more truffle flavor), seafood paella was phenomenal (don't expect a Spanish paella), and the seafood pancake.

Response from the owner

It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your recent dinner at Barn Joo Union Square, Eugenie. We appreciate your feedback about our truffle fries and will certainly consider your suggestion for enhancing the flavor.

We're glad you found our seafood paella to be phenomenal and appreciate your understanding regarding the service during busy times. Thank you for recommending making a reservation, as it can help ensure a smoother experience. We look forward to welcoming you back for another enjoyable meal!

It was the different Thanksgiving Than I have experience before. I thought it was going to feel Thainksgiving it didn't represent the holidays time but not only I hear christmas music but the moment we enter we were warmly welcome by Mr. Nick. We were able to order our food with him and get recommendation of different types of plates. At the end I order my stone plate bibimbap bulgogi. They were also able to accommodate for my child taste. As a restaurant on union square, I already knew the food would be a little pricier—I didn’t expect it to be actually really good. I got the 3 tacos with the spicy pork and it was fantastic.

As a Korean, I’m always a little wary of Korean fusion foods, but the pork really tasted like Korean spicy pork in a taco, and I loved how the veggies and sauces that went with it.

Service was great. And it looks like if you make a reservation, you get to spin a wheel for things like a free beer!

Response from the owner

It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your recent visit, Hannah! We’re thrilled that our spicy pork tacos exceeded your expectations, especially given your background in Korean cuisine. It’s our goal to deliver authentic flavors with a fusion twist.

Thank you for complimenting our service and for mentioning the fun reservation perk! We can’t wait to welcome you back for more delicious dishes.

Best regards,
Barn Joo Union Square

The food here is absolutely excellent — flavorful, fresh, and perfectly prepared. On top of that, the service we received from Nick was outstanding. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, and his attention to detail really made the experience special. Dining here truly felt like being “up the hill” — everything was a step above the rest. Highly recommend both the food and the service!
