American Museum of Natural History is a large, multi-building museum complex on the Upper West Side of Manhattan known for its expansive collection of scientific, cultural, and natural history exhibits. The space is spread across multiple floors and interconnected halls, giving it a wide, branching layout where each section leads into a different themed environment. The scale of the building is immediately noticeable, and the interior feels designed for long, continuous exploration rather than a quick walkthrough.<br><br>The most recognizable sections include the dinosaur fossil halls, where large skeletons and prehistoric displays dominate the space and create a strong sense of scale. The ocean life exhibits and taxidermy dioramas add a more detailed, observational layer, with carefully arranged environments that feel distinct from the fossil-heavy areas. Other sections like the butterfly exhibit and interactive displays introduce a lighter, more hands-on contrast, adding variety across the different floors and wings of the museum.<br><br>Movement through the museum feels open-ended and self-directed, with visitors often shifting between floors and halls based on visual interest rather than a fixed route. The size of the museum naturally leads to a slower pace, and it is common for sections to feel densely packed with information and exhibits, making it easy to spend extended time inside without fully covering everything.

One of the best museum in the world. I was so lucky that I met a lady in the subway train and Susan was kind to give me a complementary ticket with a show. We took the audio guide tour and it was detailed. The collection is huge. I got introduced to the amazon basin culture. I enjoyed the birds section and the dinosaur.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York was honestly such a fun experience for the family. The exhibits were beautiful, the dinosaurs were amazing, and there was so much to see that you could spend all day there. Definitely worth visiting at least once!<br><br>BUT… be prepared to spend money before you even walk in 😭 I get it it’s Manhattan. It’s New York. But gosh<br><br>We got there around 9:30 AM thinking we were early, only to realize the museum doesn’t open until 10. We sat waiting for about 45 minutes while the parking garage clock kept running the whole time. Parking ended up costing us $60 alone,18% tax/fee<br><br>And don’t even get food from the carts outside unless you ask for prices FIRST. $85 for 5 hot dogs, fries, and drinks. Absolutely insane.<br><br>Overall: amazing museum, but the parking garage prices and food carts outside were crazy expensive. Plan ahead, bring snacks, and expect NYC prices!

Had a great visit to the American Museum of Natural History. Parking was easy, the museum is beautiful, and there’s plenty of space to move around, even with strollers. Unlike some other attractions, visitors seemed to keep moving through the exhibits, making it easy to enjoy everything without feeling crowded. The displays are impressive, and the overall experience was excellent.<br><br>My only complaints are the food court and the elevators. The food court prices are extremely high for the quality of food offered, which was disappointing. Also, the elevators could use some attention, as they were slow and seemed to struggle with the amount of traffic.<br><br>Overall, a fantastic museum and well worth visiting. The exhibits, layout, and atmosphere make for a great day out.

You can easily spend a whole day here. There are 5 levels of exhibitions as well as ticketed exhibitions.<br><br>If you can I would recommend getting the general admission with all ticketed exhibits. Their ticketed exhibits are truly amazing. We went to the milky way ticketed exhibit and it was mind-blowing.<br><br>Try to come early as long lines forms as it gets nearer to noon.<br><br>Personally I find the level 1 exhibitions being more interesting. The level 4 dinosaur exhibitions are very cool as well. Most of the bones are real ones!

So much to see! Amazing exhibits that provide a wealth of information on animals from all over the world. The Dinosaurs on the 4th were spectacular! You can spend the entire day here and still not see it all.<br><br>As a NY resident you "pay what you choose" which means when you select your ticket price it asks for an amount no lower than $0.01 per ticket! You cannot enter the planetarium and other additional features with a basic resident ticket.<br><br>The museum has its own dedicated parking, multiple souvenir shops throughout, and plenty of food options.<br><br>• Bathrooms are well marked on each floor.<br>• Avoid the main entrance for faster entry.<br>• Use the stairs if able as the elevators get crowded and there can be long waits.

We had an amazing time at the American Museum of Natural History with our 3-year-old daughter. The exhibits are incredible, very well displayed, and everything is perfectly organized, which made it really easy to explore and enjoy the museum as a family.<br><br>There’s so much to see and the whole experience felt engaging for both kids and adults. The food court was also a lifesaver during the visit, and we were pleasantly surprised by how diverse the food options were.<br><br>Definitely one of the highlights of our NYC trip and a place we would absolutely visit again.

Absolutely incredible and easily one of the best museums I’ve ever visited. It’s massive, with so many different halls and exhibits that you could easily spend an entire day here and still not see everything.<br><br>What makes it so special is the variety, from towering dinosaur skeletons and fascinating fossil halls, to immersive exhibits like the Hayden Planetarium and beautifully curated cultural and natural history displays. Every section feels engaging and thoughtfully put together, with something interesting at every turn.<br><br>The giant blue whale was especially impressive!!

What I loved most was how immersive everything felt, with thoughtfully designed exhibits ranging from space in the Hayden Planetarium to biodiversity and human cultures, all balanced with interactive displays and classic presentations so it never feels boring. The museum is also very well organized despite its size, and you can spend hours exploring while still feeling like there is more to see. It is great for all ages, whether you are really into science or just looking for something fun and interesting to do in NYC. Overall, this is one of the best museums I have ever visited, and it is educational, visually stunning, and genuinely exciting to explore, making it a must see if you are in New York.

Fantastic place to spend the day. And trust me you will spend the entire day here! I didn’t realise it was so huge. 5 floors of exhibits to enjoy. Must sees for me were the ocean room and the dinosaur fossils and I 10/10 recommend the extra for the butterfly vivarium. Loved being in the room with all the beautiful butterfly’s flying around and if you’re lucky one might land on your arm or head! Easy to get to via the subway. Loved it!

The new Gilder Center entrance is a spatial marvel—its organic, canyon-like design is a must-see for any architecture enthusiast.<br><br>Highlights from my visit:<br><br>Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals: Easily one of the best displays in the world. The lighting is superb, highlighting the massive Amethyst Geodes and the stunning "Extraordinary Elbaite".<br><br>Milstein Hall of Ocean Life: Standing under the 94-foot Blue Whale is a quintessential NYC experience. The atmosphere is serene and awe-inspiring.<br><br>Fossil Halls: The 4th-floor dinosaurs are legendary, but don't miss the dramatic Barosaurus and Allosaurus display at the 2nd-floor rotunda entrance—it's one of the most dynamic museum greetings you'll ever see.<br><br>Whether you're here for the "Night at the Museum" nostalgia or the cutting-edge science, it’s a world-class institution that requires at least half a day to truly appreciate.

If you're in New York, this place is absolutely worth the detour. The museum is huge, beautifully curated and packed with exhibits that actually make you stop and think. The dinosaur section is the clear showstopper. The sheer scale of the fossils is unbelievable and the detailing is on another level. Even if you're not a science person, standing under those massive skeletons hits differently.<br><br>The architecture surprised me the most. The new Gilder Center looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. The curved walls, the open atrium, the way natural light moves through the structure, everything feels futuristic yet warm. It's one of those buildings where you end up taking photos even if you hadn't planned to.<br><br>Navigation is simple once you get your bearings. Signage is clear, the staff is attentive, and the crowd flow is handled well considering how popular this place is. Plan at least three to four hours if you want to enjoy it without rushing.<br><br>Overall, it's one of the most impressive museums I've seen. A balanced mix of science, history and good design. Definitely recommended for anyone visiting NYC.

The American Museum of Natural History never disappoints. You could easily spend hours here — especially in the incredible animal exhibits, where lifelike dioramas make you feel like you’re standing in the middle of the wild. It’s one of those places that fascinates you no matter how many times you visit.<br><br>This was our second time, and it was just as impressive as the first. Even though the weather outside was beautiful — and we briefly considered renting bikes in Central Park instead — we stuck to our plan and went to the museum. Weather-wise, probably not the best choice, but absolutely worth it.<br><br>We added two special exhibitions to our visit (both extra cost):<br>“Invisible Worlds” — a stunning, beautifully produced show about the hidden connections between all living things and how we share DNA with nearly everything on Earth. Highly recommended.<br><br>The Milky Way Encounters — another highlight, with breathtaking visuals projected on the dome ceiling as you recline in your seat and journey through space.<br><br>Aside from that, we explored much of the permanent collection — though there’s always more to see. I’d say we covered about 80% this time, which is progress from our first visit!<br><br>A world-class museum, perfect for all ages. Whether you’re into nature, science, or just want to feel small in the best possible way — this place is a must.
