Me and my family love this place. The food is delicious and we enjoy trying different dishes. Today Sunday 6/7 my family met in Chinatown and after shopping we ate at this restaurant. We been coming here for years. We tried their seafood rice beef with noodles soup dumplings sesame chicken scallion pancake. So good!

I've only been here during the lunch hours and it can get quite crowded. The staff are very adamant about where you sit. I wanted to change my seat and the waiter just ignored my request and walked away. Another time, I wanted to position my chair for more space and the waiter said no. Other than the disrespectful staff, the food here is very good. I tried the fish fillet and it is crispy and delicious. The eggplant over rice is amazing as well. The lunch specials are affordable and you get free tea and a bowl of hot and sour soup too. This place has great food but the service is lacking. I don't like coming back and treated poorly. Chinatown is full of great options and this ain't it for me.

I honestly wanted to like this place because it was pretty busy and seemed popular, but unfortunately the food was really disappointing.
The duck was dry and completely lacking flavor. It honestly felt like they just threw a lot of salt on top to make it taste like something, but that didn’t help much.
The vegetables in oyster sauce also tasted off. It felt like the vegetables and the sauce had been prepared separately and only mixed together at the very end, instead of being cooked properly together, which really affected the overall taste.
The restaurant itself was crowded and I noticed that most people seemed to be ordering the more standard dishes like rice and dumplings, so maybe those are the safer options here.
If you decide to go, I would definitely avoid the duck. It honestly tasted like something that had been frozen for a long time and just reheated, maybe because it’s not one of their more commonly ordered dishes.
For $60, this was easily some of the worst food I had during my time in NYC, so the value for money was honestly terrible.
Would I eat here again? No.
Still, feel free to try it and make your own experience, but I personally wouldn’t come back.

I got the whole peking duck and 8 pan fried dumplings.
They were both really good, although I wouldn't recommend anyone eating a whole duck by themselves (even though I did)

Service was good, atmosphere was great

456 Shanghai serves popular Chinese dishes that appeal to most people, though the flavors are fairly ordinary. Their lunch special is a very cost-effective option for a quick and filling meal. For only $9.25, you get rice, an entrée, and hot and sour soup. Overall, the food quality matches the price.

I got the peanut butter noodles and was honestly disappointed to say the least. Maybe I just wasn't expecting them to be served cold, or for the flavor to be better. They tasted like normal, cold noodles with a ton of peanut butter and soy sauce.

The whole place was packed though, so I'm sure they have great food! I'd love to come back and order something else. The staff was great at getting me a table quickly, even thought there wasn't a lot of open space. Very fun vibe!

The place is fantastic, food really terrific and tasty, and I have to say, enormous portions.
My wife and I happened to be in New York, all the way from Northern Ireland, and while here hopped on a bus, hopped off at China town, and did a bit of shopping, and decided to have something to eat.
I asked, very politely, a passer by were would be nice to get something to eat.
A restaurant she replied, I said yes, and around the corner is a really good one, meaning New Shanghai.
Not disappointed, as we were seated and offered menus, large selection, drinks, and water.
I happened to ask if the portions were large, and thankfully I did, as we ordered one meal, of which was sweet and sour chicken, and it was more than enough for the two of us, and we unfortunately couldn't finish it, and not for the want for trying, as it was delicious.
Top tip, if you're not sure, ask a local.

BE CAREFUL - when we paid in cash, the server automatically kept 30% tip, and gave us less change. They did not tell us they would do that. They did not allow us to choose how much to tip. Otherwise, food is great.

I’ve been to 456 New Shanghai many times, and it’s one of my favorite places to eat in Chinatown. The food is always tasty and authentic — it really reminds me of the flavors from China. I especially love the xiao long bao; the hot soup inside is so satisfying. My favorite dish is the crispy pork chops with salt and pepper — crispy, flavorful, and always fresh. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are generous. It’s a great spot for delicious Chinese food without spending too much.

This is by far the best General Tso’s in NYC that I have ever had. Chicken is crispy and the perfect amount of sauce on it. Waiters were very professional and polite. Restaurant is very clean and AC works great. Highly recommend

Went here with a couple of friends and it was delicious. Amazing late night dinner find. Pan fried noodles were delicious although a lot of oil pooled at the bottom. Still give it a try though! Soup dumplings are always a classic here - hot, flavorful and super tasty! Stop here to get some great authentic eats!

The food was absolutely delicious! We had chicken lo mein, soup dumplings, and sweet and sour chicken (with sauce on the side - our preference.) They have plenty of seating, good service, and the food came out in good timing and was very fresh and hot. We also received hot tea when we were seated. 10/10 recommend!

I came here twice when visiting NYC. Great food, fast service. The only thing that left sour taste in mouth - added obligatory “service charge” second time. We were family 2 adults 3 kids. First time they didnt charge extra and I happily left about 20% tip. Second time - they suddenly added 18% service charge. Not that I wouldnt leave a tip… but I would appreciate for parties of 5 it would be my choice. Never had experience like that with parties of 5.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable meal in Chinatown, 456 Shanghai on Mott Street is the place to go! We visited with our family of five, and it was hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. The steamed soup dumplings—both the shrimp and pork and the pork—were the best we’ve ever had, easily the top dumplings on Mott Street. The fried soup dumplings were also great, but the steamed ones really stole the show.

The General Tso’s chicken was phenomenal—crispy, flavorful, and not overly sweet, the best we’ve ever tasted. We also tried the orange chicken and the Shanghai rice cakes, both of which were delicious. If you’re in Chinatown, don’t miss out on the best dumplings in town. The food, service, and atmosphere at 456 Shanghai make it a must-visit!
