my home away from home, the hamptons

Hamptons travel and restaurant guide by Heather Cox of Eat Real Food

The Hamptons mean different things to different people. For some, it's a couple of months a year where they cram themselves into a share house and spend the weekends partying all night and sleeping by the pool all day.

For others, it's a place they bring their kids during the school holidays to run around in the outdoors and hang at the beach.

For me, it's about connecting with the earth, swimming in the ocean and being part of a community. A community that is farming the land, making our bread, catching our fish and producing our wine. The most important things in life if you ask me! hehe

So i thought i would share with you my favourite places to eat, shop and drink out here, in the hopes that they will become your favorites too. Enjoy!

FARMERS MARKETS

BALSAM FARMS |  8 days a week 9am- 6pm May- October

My favourite farm stand on the east end (ok, i'm a little biased as i've worked the past 2 summers here) but it really is the best! Offering a plethora of organic vegetables, north fork fruit and local artisanal products like Carissas Breads and Goodwater Farms microgreens, Balsam Farms is fast becoming your one stop farm stand shop! (Try saying that a few times!)

284 Town lane, Amagansett | balsamfarms.com

BHUMI FARMS | Hours unknown

Farmer Frank of Bhumi Farms is a fast growing newcomer to the Hamptons farm stand scene. Offering (recently certified) organic vegetables grown on site, fruit from the north fork and local, artisanal products this gorgeous little stand with it's white and yellow shutters, perched on the side of the highway is hard to miss. So don't!

MONTAUK FARMERS MARKET | June 9th-Sep 1st Thursdays 9am-2pm | Sep 9th- Sep 30th Fridays 9am-2pm

Offering local fruit, veg, baked goods, flowers and wine, this market has been dubbed the "Foodie Coachella" of the East End. No need to say more!

Village green, Centre of Montauk town | facebook.com/montaukfarmersmarket

THE SPRINGS FARMERS MARKETS | Memorial Day weekend- the end of summer Saturdays 9am- 1pm

A cute little locals market tucked away in the Springs offering live music, fruit and veg, breads, oils and delicious woodfire breakfast pizzas. A fun way to start your Saturday morning.

EECO FARMS | Thursday- Sunday 10am-6pm

EECO Farm Stand sells locally grown vegetables, jams, breads, flowers and honey with all proceeds going to support the Food Pantry Farms charitable programs.  Eating for a cause. I like it!

P.S If you eat chicken, pop across the street to IACONO FARM for fresh eggs and chicken meat. My cats love it!

55 Long Lane, East Hampton | foodpantryfarm.org | eecofarm.org

AMAGANSETT FARMERS MARKET | Hours still unknown

Recently taken over by the AFI (Amagansett Farmers Institute) this space is a work in progress. Offering local and New York state food and beverages to 'support, promote, and advocate for the farmers, vintners, fishermen, and other food producers and providers on the East End of Long Island' it promises to add a much needed place to shop for the Amagansett community which is really lacking in a good, local, healthy market.

GREEN THUMB | Hours unknown |  Certified organic | 829 Montauk Highway, Watermill

FOR COFFEE/BREAKFAST/BRUNCH:

JACKS COFFEE | Mon- Sun 630am-5pm

Be prepared for a line out the door at this popular little spot serving the best (and only) organic coffee in town, fresh Montauk Juice Factory juices and delicious vegan baked goods (i have a slight obsession with their organic apple cider donuts!). Soon to be opening in Sag Harbour too.

146 Montauk highway, Amagansett | jacksstirbrew.com

THE LIVING ROOM at The Maidstone | 7 days a week 8am - 11pm

One of my favourite spots in East Hampton, the Living Room is fun at any time of the day but breakfast/brunch is my fave. Organic and local where possible and with an onsite bakery making bread, pastries and Swedish cookies, this cute and quirky space is well worth a visit. If the weather is nice ask to sit out the back in the garden. It's divine.

207 Main Street, East Hampton | themaidstone.com

BLUESTONE LANE | Monday- Friday 8am-12pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am- 11am

Bluestone Lane has finally opened up out east and i have no doubt they are going to have a great first year out here. Offering the best coffee in town (obviously, they're Australian!), the original Avocado toast (yes, that is also Australian!) and iced matcha lattes. This little coffee house is definitely the place to be this summer.

786 Main Street, Montauk | bluestonelane.com

CROWS NEST | Summer: Wednesday - Sunday 5pm-10pm, Sunday brunch starting in July

Crows Nest is by far my no. 1  restaurant in the Hamptons. And again, is great at any time of the day but Sunday brunch is definitely my fave. The food is incredible and the atmosphere is dreamy. They don't take reservations but just get there early and you should be fine. If you're going for dinner, arrive early, put your name down on the list and head to the water for a sunset drink while you wait. You won't even notice the time go by. Absolutely stunning.

FOR LUNCH:

HAMPTONS CHUTNEY CO. | Monday- Thursday 10am- 6pm, Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-7pm.

Paul McCartney and Alec Baldwin are regulars at this Amagansett institution serving sourdough dosas filled with delicious things like indian masala potatoes or rocket, tomato and avocado with cilantro chutney (Yum!). Hang outside on the picnic tables or call ahead and order take-out for an afternoon at the beach. So good.

SUNSET BEACH | Monday- Friday 8am- 11pm, Saturday 8am- 1am, Sunday 8am-12pm

'I think we might need to take a taxi home, i want to sit here and drink rose all afternoon' - not an uncommon phrase from my mouth while sitting on the terrace of this uber 'chic but casual' restaurant overlooking the stunning waters of Shelter Island. It is by far the best place in town to enjoy lunch (the nicoise salad obviously being my favourite dish!) and a bottle of wine. If you can't make it for lunch then get there for their killer sunsets. Lots of fun.

27 Shore Road, Shelter Island | sunsetbeachli.com

CARAVAN | Thursday- Monday 9.30am-5.30pm

Finally! My kind of place has opened up in town. Serving local, healthy and delicious food with the menu changing each week depending on what's in season, this gorgeous little spot offers things like smoked bluefish, tartines and nicoise salads. Grab their food to go or hang out at the cute tables set up just outside the store. Either way, this place is a winner!

SURF LODGE | Call for hours

I have a love/hate relationship with Surf Lodge. I love it in the off months of May, June and September when it's not crazy busy and you don't have to wait behind a rope to get in. Hate it when you have to wait behind a rope to get in! A great spot to enjoy a lazy, organic, market driven lunch though so make a reservation well in advance or get there early, before the rope goes up!

FOR DRINKS/DINNER:

MOBYS | CLOSED

Everybody's favourite place to hang in the summer, this Aussie owned restaurant offers rustic, simple, local fare including woodfire pizzas, salads and whole fish in a setting that feels like you are walking into your own home. Hang out and eat in the main dining room or chill by the fire out the back. The best thing about Moby's though? They have rosé on tap!

341 Pantigo Road, East Hampton | mobysny.com

RUSHMYERS | Call for hours

With a 'summer camp' feel and teepees scattered amongst the grass, this uber hip hotel/restaurant is the place to be seen. Luckily it's not just a pretty face though, the food here was incredible last year so fingers crossed they bring their A-game again this year. It gets super busy in the peak months of July and August so book ahead or like most places... turn up early, early, early!

VINE STREET | Thursday, Sunday and Monday 5pm-9pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm-10pm, Closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Taking the ferry across the water to Shelter Island is such a treat and dinner at this restaurant is well worth the trek. Vine Street offers a seasonally driven menu in a setting that is so cute, you'll definitely be staying for dessert.

FOR SUPER HEALTHY + SPECIALITY

PROVISIONS |  Daily 8am- 6pm, cafe closes at 4pm

Oh Provisions, why won't you open in Amagansett? This organic market and cafe is the only one of it's kind out this way and has me driving an hour round trip just to do my grocery shopping every week! Selling everything from local produce to bread, vitamins and cleaning products. Provisions is open year round and really is the only spot to pick up your provisions (see what i did there? ha).

Corner of Bay and Provision Streets, Sag Harbor | provisionsnaturalfoods.com

SECOND NATURE MARKET | Daily 9.30am-6pm

Located in both East and South Hampton, this store is a savior for me when the farm stands are in full bloom and all i need are things like quinoa, nut butter or dishwashing detergent. It means i don't have to drive all the way to Provisions! Sadly, they don't offer produce but the Southampton store does have an organic juice bar.

41 Newtown Lane, East Hampton | secondnaturemarkets.com

MONTAUK JUICE FACTORY | Daily 9am- 5pm

Offering organic, plant based goodness through cold pressed juices and raw food, this cute little spot is the perfect destination to replace those nutrients you may have lost at the bar the night before. I mean, who doesn't like the sound of drinking 'liquid sunshine' after a big night?

12 South Etna Avenue, Montauk | montaukjuicefactory.com

CAVANIOLAS | Monday 9am-6pm, Closed Tuesday, Wednesday- Saturday 9am- 6pm, Sunday 10am-4pm

These guys kill me with their delicious smelling cheeses, bottles of truffle oil and chocolate croissants. Not a spot i allow myself to visit too frequently but it's such a treat for those indulgent weekends. I mean, wine tastes better with olives, cheese and bikkies, right?

89 Division Street, Sag Harbour | Amagansett Square, Amagansett | cavaniolas.com

STUARTS FISH MARKET | Monday- Sunday 9am-6pm

This gorgeous little store is my go-to spot for fish out east. Offering things like locally caught fluke, wild salmon, and my favorite fish of all time, halibut, in a tiny little house tucked away in the back streets of Amagansett.

41 Oak Lane, Amagansett | stuartsseafood.com

BOTANICA BAZAAR | Call for hours

New to the hood, this chic 'natural pharmacy' offers holistic remedies and organic products like fluoride free toothpaste, natural deodorant and yummy smelling ointments, in a beautifully designed space of course.

FOR WINE TASTING

CHANNING DAUGHTERS WINERY | Daily 11am- 5pm

Sunday afternoon wine tastings are what it's all about at this gorgeous winery tucked in the back streets of Bridgehampton. Practicing sustainability through their organic nitrogen use, cover crops and recycling, Channing Daughters is my favorite vineyard out east. Oh, and you are definitely going to be tempted to take some wine home with you so make sure you have room in the car (and a designated driver!)

1927 Scuttlehole Road, Bridgehampton | channingdaughters.com

WOLFFER ESTATE

One of my absolute favorite things to do on a Friday afternoon in the summer months is grab a picnic blanket and spend the last hours of the day on the grass at Wolffer Estate drinking rose, listening to live music and eating cheese and bikkies. They offer fun things like yoga classes amongst the vines and 'twighlight thursdays' during the week too. Check out their website for more info.

FOR HOMEWARES SHOPPING:

CLIC | Thursday- Monday 10am- 6pm

Clic is my go-to store for photography, homewares, furniture, rugs and now clothing. Owned by the fabulous Cristiane Celle, founder of Calypso, this incredibly curated store offers one of a kind art pieces, chic but casual clothing and an array of fluffy blankets that will make you want to curl up on the couch all day and never leave.

60 Newtown Lane, East Hampton | clic.com

THE LINE | Daily from 10am- 6pm

A conceptual store based out of NYC and LA, the Line is decked out like you are walking into a home, yet everything you see is for sale. Browse through the wardrobe for a new pair of jeans or sit on the couch and flick through your favorite fashion book. Everything you see could be yours. Such a fabulous way to shop!

154 Main Street, Amagansett | theline.com

VERNACULAR |

This gorgeous little store tucked away on the main street of Amagansett is sadly quite easy to miss but it is one of my favorite places to shop for homewares out east and well worth a visit. Over the few years i have lived out here i've slowly moved things from their shelves to mine and am constantly popping in for more! (Much to my husbands disgust!) You can find glassware, ceramics and even jewelry here. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

136 Main Street, Amagansett | vernacularetc.com

LOVE ADORNED | Sunday- Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-7pm

Situated right in the middle of Amagansett Square, this gorgeous store is hard to miss. Marble cutting boards, plush throws and delicious smelling candles are all on show here. There are even mens wallets, socks and sunglasses... So the hubby doesn't get bored.

156 Main Street, Amagansett Square | loveadorned.com

JAN GEORGE |

If you're into design then do not leave Sag Harbor without popping into this store. If i died and went to interior heaven, this store would be it. With the perfect balance of whites and wood, their curated collection offers everything from comfy sofas to divinely soft linens to dinner plates and cutlery. Clean, modern and absolutely stunning.

11 Madison Street, Sag Harbor | jangeorge.com

SYLVESTER & CO | Monday- Saturday 9am-6pm, Sunday 9am-5pm

This store is so much fun and even offers a coffee bar for you to grab a latte while you browse their offering. Books, games, tabletop items, furniture and even toys for your pet can be found as you wander. There is something for everyone here!
